Who is Champat Rai Who Resigned as Ram Mandir Trust Chief?

The CSR Journal Magazine

Champat Rai has stepped down from his position as the head of the Ram Mandir Trust following allegations of embezzlement involving donations intended for the temple in Ayodhya. His resignation came just a day after a first information report (FIR) was filed and eight individuals were arrested in connection with the case. As the general secretary of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Rai was responsible for managing the temple’s financial resources.

Reports suggest that approximately Rs 7 to 7.5 crore may be missing from the donated funds. Rai has described his resignation as an act of moral responsibility in light of these allegations. The situation escalated after the arrest of Ramashankar Yadav, known as Tinnu, who is reportedly Rai’s driver and close confidant. This development intensified scrutiny of Rai’s role and responsibilities.

In addition to Yadav, the other individuals arrested include temple staff members tasked with cash counting and a retired banker overseeing the financial processes. The controversy surrounding Rai has attracted significant attention from the opposition, particularly the Samajwadi Party, which has accused the authorities of protecting influential figures.

Background of Champat Rai

Champat Rai has been a prominent figure in the Ram Mandir movement for several decades, with many acknowledging his commitment to the cause since the 1980s. Although he has gained considerable recognition within the movement, details about his early life are less widely known. Rai was born in 1946 in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh and was influenced by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideology from an early age.

Before his involvement with the Ram temple movement, Rai worked as a Chemistry professor at RSM Degree College in Bijnor. His engagement with social and political activism took a significant turn during the Emergency period in India, when he was arrested in 1977. His supporters assert that his arrest was due to his ties with the RSS, and he reportedly spent around 18 months in custody during that time.

Rai’s life has been characterised by his fervent commitment to the Ram Mandir cause, reflecting a personal and ideological dedication. He has claimed that he has devoted his entire life to the movement and its goals. However, the recent allegations have cast a shadow over these decades of work, bringing his leadership role into question.

Reactions to the Allegations and Resignation

The allegations and subsequent resignation of Champat Rai have triggered a wave of reactions from various political factions. Following the announcement of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, Rai initially expressed disbelief regarding the claims of theft. Nevertheless, he later welcomed the inquiry, which indicates a shift in his stance amidst growing pressure.

The SIT had provided preliminary findings to the government earlier this week, which led to the arrests of the aforementioned eight individuals. This sequence of events has highlighted the ongoing scrutiny of financial governance within the trust and raised questions regarding accountability at higher levels of leadership.

Political parties, especially the Samajwadi Party, have voiced concerns about potential cover-ups, suggesting that powerful individuals might evade accountability due to their status. As the investigation continues, Rai’s role and the confidence in the management of Ram Mandir funds remain significant issues in the public domain.
