Samajwadi Party (SP) Member of Parliament Awadhesh Prasad has called for a discussion in Parliament regarding the alleged theft of donations earmarked for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. He stated that the incident has severely hurt the sentiments of millions of devotees. Prasad accused the government of not taking appropriate action against those responsible for the alleged misappropriation of funds.

Prasad highlighted that the issue was brought to light by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav nearly two months ago, yet no significant measures have been taken since then. He expressed frustration that the authorities appear to be protecting influential individuals involved in the case instead of ensuring accountability. Prasad emphasised the need for the matter to be openly discussed in the House and urged for a response from the government.

Political Implications in Uttar Pradesh

The alleged theft of donations has become a significant political issue in Uttar Pradesh, with the Opposition consistently accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government of neglecting accountability and transparency regarding temple finances. The SP has requested a thorough and unbiased investigation into the incident, as they believe that the responsible parties have yet to face justice.

During the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament and the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the SP has been particularly vocal in their criticism of the BJP concerning this matter. Members of the party have staged symbolic protests to raise awareness about the alleged embezzlement, including a demonstration where donations were placed by Akhilesh Yadav into a donation box.

The controversy has intensified the ongoing political rivalry in the state, as Opposition parties strive to spotlight issues that may undermine the BJP’s standing. The Ram Temple’s construction is paramount in the region, making any allegation related to its funds especially significant.

Government’s Response and Accusations

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the issue on Tuesday, stating that no evidence of involvement from any religious leaders was found in the initial report from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) regarding the alleged theft. He also accused the SP and other Opposition members of acting in ways that are “undemocratic and unconstitutional.” Adityanath described their conduct as offensive to the legacy of ‘Bharat Ratna’ Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar.

In media interactions, Adityanath noted, “The initial report of the SIT did not reveal any involvement of sadhu or saint in the alleged embezzlement at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple.” He used this opportunity to further criticise the SP and the Opposition, claiming that their actions demonstrate a disregard for democratic principles.

Moreover, he specifically targeted the Samajwadi Party, accusing them of tarnishing the sanctity of Ayodhya during their governance and linking it to the ongoing dispute over the temple’s financial management. The Chief Minister’s statements reflect a larger narrative surrounding the importance of the Ram Temple in both cultural and political contexts in Uttar Pradesh.
