Delhi Police File FIR After Attack on MP Pappu Yadav at Press Conference

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Police has reported the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) concerning an incident where independent Member of Parliament Rajesh Ranjan, known as Pappu Yadav, was attacked during a press conference. The parliamentarian claims that one individual attempted to stab him with a knife amid the fracas at the scene.

The individuals implicated in the altercation have been identified as Happy Sharma and Sumit Giri. Both individuals allegedly have close ties to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and originate from Bulandshahar district in Uttar Pradesh. Their affiliations with the party include roles as local officials in Bulandshahar.

Sharma has reportedly taken on the role of vice president within a rural unit of the party, while Giri functions as a city secretary. Professionally, Sharma is engaged in contracting work, and Giri is involved in agricultural and property-related business activities.

Developments Following the Attack

The FIR was registered after the two men purportedly entered Pappu Yadav’s residence, which led to a physical altercation and a necessary police intervention. This incident briefly caused security alarms to be raised, and both individuals were taken into custody for questioning.

Delhi Police officials are currently scrutinising the details of the incident. They are trying to ascertain whether a knife was indeed present at the location. Following the collection of the relevant information, the necessary legal steps will be undertaken, according to law enforcement sources.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The FIR has been lodged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Key sections include Section 221 for preventing a public servant from carrying out their official responsibilities, Section 121(1) for intentionally injuring a public servant with the aim of hindering their duties, Section 132 for attacking or using criminal force against a public servant, and Section 3(5) related to common intention.

This report was filed by law enforcement officials assigned to safeguard the lawmaker, who alleged they were impeded and assaulted while executing security tasks during the incident, as reported by an official cited by news agency PTI.

Investigators are currently analysing CCTV footage from both the lawmaker’s premises and surrounding areas, and they are gathering witness statements alongside accounts from police personnel. Reports indicate that the two individuals allegedly gained access to Pappu Yadav’s residence, where a slipper was reportedly thrown before any confrontation took place.

Moreover, police officials stated that a knife was handed over along with Giri when he was apprehended by supporters of Pappu Yadav. This incident coincided with Yadav’s press statement, which faced criticism from the BJP and various Hindu groups over his contentious protests associated with the alleged misappropriation of Ram Mandir donations. In light of the attack, Yadav has asserted that he will not be cowed by what he describes as an “attempt on his life.” He has also suggested that individuals connected with the BJP are providing protection to the accused.
