West Bengal Government Intensifies Actions After Park Circus Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

The West Bengal government has launched a significant crackdown in the predominantly Muslim area of Park Circus, Kolkata, following violent protests against restrictions on roadside namaz and recent anti-encroachment drives. The protests escalated on Sunday, resulting in injuries to at least ten security personnel and the arrest of 40 individuals. The police confirmed that demonstrators blocked roads and clashed with security forces, leading to stone-pelting incidents and damage to official vehicles.

Reports indicate that protesters gathered near the Park Circus Seven Point Crossing, a busy junction in Kolkata, to express their discontent over the new regulations. The unrest prompted a robust police response, including baton charges to disperse the crowds. As riots erupted, the police faced considerable aggression from demonstrators, allegedly indicating a premeditated plan, according to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Following the violence, the Kolkata Police intensified security measures, including heightened surveillance and barricading of sensitive areas. Senior police officials remained in the locality overnight to oversee ongoing developments, ensuring that the situation remained under control.

Suvendu Adhikari’s Strong Response

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who also oversees the Home Department, visited Park Circus on Monday to address the unrest. He emphasised a stringent stance against vandalism, asserting that actions under the guise of religious slogans would not be accepted. Adhikari highlighted the government’s ‘zero-tolerance’ policy concerning such incidents and reiterated that miscreants would be dealt with decisively.

Adhikari stated that the incidents were reminiscent of violence previously contained in regions like Kashmir, suggesting that similar outcomes should be expected in West Bengal. He underscored the continued deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the state as necessary to maintain law and order. The Chief Minister expressed concerns over the need for ongoing support from the Centre regarding paramilitary forces in the state.

The Chief Minister further accused the previous administration, led by Mamata Banerjee, of laxity in maintaining public safety during protests. He claimed that while police personnel suffered injuries, the former Chief Minister remained disengaged from the realities faced by security forces on the ground.

Government’s Focus on Law and Order

In the context of these events, the West Bengal government recently implemented measures limiting namaz gatherings in public spaces, alongside guidelines concerning azan and Eid qurbani. The crackdown on encroachments had intensified tensions in localities deemed sensitive following the enforcement of these regulations.

As discussions among political leaders ensue, the Trinamool Congress has rejected accusations from BJP leaders, asserting that their focus remains on addressing the repercussions of the government’s actions rather than on the alleged orchestration of the protests. Mamata Banerjee emphasized that Bengal, historically associated with figures like Rabindranath Tagore, does not endorse “bulldozer politics,” a term referring to aggressive anti-encroachment measures.

As of Monday, the presence of extensive police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel continued, with ongoing patrols and flag marches across the Park Circus area. Chief Minister Adhikari’s visit aimed to convey a stern message regarding the government’s approach to unrest in the region, signalling a commitment to enforcing order amidst growing tensions.
