The Kerala Police will introduce a new initiative named ‘My Police Station’ on August 15, coinciding with Independence Day, as announced by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala. This initiative aims to transform police stations into institutions that are more accessible and welcoming to the public, marking a significant shift in the operational framework of law enforcement in the region.

Chennithala described this reform as a pioneering, station-centric model, which is believed to be the first of its kind in India. The initiative is designed to prioritise the needs of citizens, thereby enhancing the relationship between the police and the community they serve.

As part of this initiative, the responsibility of station management will shift from Circle Inspectors to Sub Inspectors. Nevertheless, 64 major police stations will retain their management under Circle Inspectors, ensuring continuity during this transitional period.

Objectives of the Initiative

The primary objective of the ‘My Police Station’ initiative is to address the concerns of citizens promptly and effectively. Under this new system, Sub Inspectors will have supervisory powers and play an essential role in ensuring that the needs of the public are met without delay.

Moreover, the initiative also aims to mitigate incidents of custodial crimes and related injustices through a more people-centric approach. Chennithala further explained that this reform is an attempt to eliminate barriers between the police and the community, making it easier for citizens to seek assistance.

To facilitate efficient handling of public grievances, a high-tech communication network will be established connecting the Home Minister’s office directly to the police stations. This technical framework is set to improve response times and service delivery, which is a critical aspect of the initiative.

Interstate Cooperation and Border Surveillance

The discussions focused on strengthening ‘Operation Toofan’, an initiative aimed at tackling drug-related issues prevalent along the border. Chennithala confirmed that both states would work together, sharing intelligence and resources to dismantle drug trafficking networks and ensure greater safety for citizens on both sides of the border.

Chennithala conveyed his gratitude to Chief Minister Vijay for his willingness to cooperate, mentioning that both parties would create a framework for ongoing intelligence sharing. This commitment is expected to bolster the efforts against narcotic mafias and improve law enforcement operations in the region.
