West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening girls’ education and women’s empowerment. During an announcement on August 14, he expressed the government’s dedication to prioritising education and ensuring the protection of women’s rights. The Chief Minister emphasised that the administration views girls as essential to the region’s development.

He highlighted the mantra of “Charuivati,” stating that the government is committed to supporting girls in their educational pursuits. Adhikari noted that significant steps have already been taken within just eight months of his government taking office, including increased opportunities for women in employment and the establishment of more educational institutions for girls.

The Chief Minister further commented on the need to ensure that no girl is forced to discontinue higher education due to financial constraints. By fostering an environment where education is accessible, the government aims to empower women to participate more actively in society.

New Financial Support Initiatives for Higher Education

During the announcement of new financial assistance measures, Adhikari declared that the government would provide Rs 50,000 for higher education for girls, a promise made in the state’s recent budget. This initiative will involve several collaborating government departments, such as the Department of Women and Child Welfare and the Department of Education, ensuring a coordinated approach to implementation.

The Chief Minister indicated that after a comprehensive review of existing systems, the government is assessing the effectiveness of the new initiatives and their capacity to address educational needs. As part of the ongoing process, the intention is to create a robust framework that can deliver meaningful results for girls’ education.

Adhikari also detailed the introduction of the Kanya Ratna Scholarship aimed specifically at female students. This scholarship will continue alongside the Vivekananda Scholarship for those achieving over 60 per cent marks in their studies. A separate fund of Rs 100 crore has been established to aid students aspiring to study abroad or to undertake national-level examinations.

Planned Increases in Financial Grants for Female Students

In a significant move to enhance financial support for girls’ studies, the Chief Minister announced that the current educational grant of Rs 1,000 per student will be doubled to Rs 2,000 by the year 2027. This increase is designed to alleviate the financial burdens that young women face while pursuing education.

The initiatives presented aim to create pathways for girls not only to access education but also to thrive in their academic and professional aspirations, both within India and internationally. The government’s strategies suggest a long-term vision for an empowered female populace capable of contributing effectively to society.
