Actor Rani Mukerji has marked a significant achievement in her career by being awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) by La Trobe University. The accolade was presented during a special ceremony at Federation Square on Friday, coinciding with the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2026. Mukerji exhibited her emotions during the event, becoming teary-eyed as she accepted the prestigious honour, which she described as a memorable experience.

Recognition for Contributions to Cinema and Society

The honorary doctorate acknowledges Rani Mukerji’s nearly thirty-year career in Indian cinema and her ongoing advocacy for women, children, and marginalised communities. A notable moment from the ceremony was captured in a viral video, which displayed the actor visibly moved as she received the award. At 48 years old, she becomes the second Indian film personality to receive this honour from La Trobe University, following Shah Rukh Khan, who was recognised in 2019 for his contributions to both cinema and philanthropy.

In her speech, Mukerji regarded the honorary doctorate as one of the most humbling experiences of her life. She reflected on her journey, noting how she aspired to make her family and country proud through her work in cinema. Mukerji said, “When I was a little girl, like everyone else, I wanted to make my family and my country proud. I did not know how to do this, but I knew if I tried hard enough to be good at something, my parents would be happy.”

She further elaborated on her creative approach, emphasising her fearlessness in selecting impactful stories. “I have been a risk-taker right from the start of my career! I have always chosen films that have made an impact in my heart first!” she stated. Mukerji has committed to portraying strong female characters and has used her platform to advocate for various humanitarian causes throughout her career.

Beyond her personal accomplishments, Mukerji shared the broader significance of cinema and the role artists play in shaping societal perceptions. La Trobe University’s Chancellor, The Honourable John Brumby AO, praised Mukerji for her impactful contributions to both cinema and society. He acknowledged that her body of work transcends traditional entertainment, sparking crucial discussions surrounding social justice, equality, and inclusion. Brumby referred to her as an exceptional recipient of the honorary doctorate due to her extensive humanitarian efforts.

During her acceptance speech, Rani Mukerji dedicated the honour to India and her global audience, expressing pride in representing her culture and cinema on an international platform. “I proudly accept this honour not only as Rani Mukerji, but also as an Indian who is proud to see her culture, her cinema being celebrated here in Australia,” she stated. This accolade represents another chapter in the ongoing narrative of Indian artistry sharing connections across borders.

Currently, Mukerji is set to reprise her well-known role as IPS officer Shivani Shivaji Roy in Mardaani 3, directed by Abhiraj Minawala and produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner. This latest installment will follow her investigation into the disappearance of numerous young girls, unveiling a disturbing human trafficking network.
