Clashes between Houthi rebels and Yemeni government forces have escalated, particularly in the mountainous province of Taiz. The fighting, which continued overnight into Thursday, has raised alarms regarding the potential for a return to a full-scale civil war. Reports indicate that at least one government soldier has been killed and another critically injured as the conflict intensifies.

These confrontations are part of a broader pattern of Houthi attacks on areas controlled by the Yemeni government. Military officials have stated that dozens of government soldiers have lost their lives in such clashes over the past week, marking a significant increase in hostilities.

Drone Attacks and Regional Tensions

In an ongoing show of strength, the Houthis have claimed responsibility for launching another drone attack targeting a Saudi Aramco refinery located in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. This latest offensive was reportedly in line with similar attacks conducted the previous weekend, when a fire was reported at the refinery, though no casualties were recorded.

The Yemen conflict, which traces its roots back to 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa, has attracted widespread foreign involvement, most notably from Saudi Arabia, which intervened in 2015 to support Yemen’s internationally recognised government. Recent actions by the Houthis also reflect a heightened level of aggression, including a blockade of Saudi shipping that threatens essential trade routes.

Hans Grundberg, the UN special envoy for Yemen, emphasised during a brief to the UN Security Council that Yemen faces a greater risk of reverting to large-scale conflict than at any time since a truce in 2022. Meanwhile, UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has warned that the humanitarian crisis is deteriorating, with six million people in Yemen nearing famine conditions.

Oil Spills and Other Regional Issues

Further complicating the regional landscape, oil spills have been reported off the coasts of Iran and Oman. The Iranian government has stated its commitment to addressing an oil spill at Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, while TankerTrackers.com suggested the spill may have originated from an Iranian attack on a bulk carrier in Omani waters.

In Oman, the Caroline Bezengi, a sanctioned tanker believed to be connected to Russia’s shadow fleet, has been grounded since June following an explosion. Efforts are reportedly underway to stop ongoing leaks from this vessel, which have been affecting coastlines hundreds of kilometres away.

As the situation unfolds, maritime risk response companies have been hired to manage the contamination from both incidents, highlighting the urgent need to address these environmental concerns amid ongoing military conflicts.

Violence in Gaza and West Bank Settler Actions

In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes have led to the deaths of at least two individuals, with more casualties reported as the Israeli military continues operations in the territory. Among the dead is Jamal Abu Kamil, a police chief, whose vehicle was struck near Gaza City. Another strike has been reported in Khan Younis, resulting in casualties linked to Hamas activities.

In the West Bank, significant actions by Israeli settlers have emerged, including the siege of a Palestinian-American family’s home. US ambassador Mike Huckabee characterised this incident as a “horrific act of terror,” showcasing rising tensions linked to settler violence.

The return of settlers to Ganim, a site evacuated in 2005, has reignited debates about settlement expansion in Palestinian territories. Defence Minister Israel Katz has declared the end of previous withdrawal policies, signalling a shift towards increased construction and settlement activities in the region.
