West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has declared a financial allocation of Rs 10 crore to assist those affected by flooding in Assam. The Chief Minister stated that the funds would be sourced from the Chief Minister’s relief fund. While addressing the Assembly on August 13, he emphasised the dire situation in Assam due to the floods, marking this initiative as a significant step in providing financial aid.

Adhikari highlighted the need for such support, noting that “Assam’s situation is not good due to floods.” He explained that West Bengal intends to extend its assistance to the neighbouring state during this difficult period. This financial aid follows reports indicating that the death toll in Assam had reached 103 as of August 12.

Ongoing Flood Situation in Assam

The flood situation in Assam remains critical as severe weather continues to impact various districts. Widespread flooding has prompted significant challenges for residents, many of whom have been forced to evacuate their homes to seek safety. The authorities are actively observing conditions in the affected regions to facilitate necessary relief and rescue operations.

To aid displaced individuals, relief camps have been established where affected families can find shelter and support. Officials are undertaking rescue efforts in various areas where residents remain trapped by floodwaters, striving to ensure their safety and well-being. Normal life has been severely disrupted in flooded areas, further necessitating the implementation of swift relief measures.

In light of the natural disaster, the Assam government has projected an expenditure of approximately Rs 1,000 crore for relief, assistance, and rehabilitation efforts. This funding aims to support communities severely impacted by the flooding that began on July 19, particularly in the Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts of Upper Assam.

Assessment and Transparency of Relief Efforts

At a press conference, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a survey would be conducted using a mobile application to evaluate the full extent of the damage inflicted by the floods. The initial phase of the survey has seen 960 surveyors assess the situation of 8,325 families, with the second phase already underway.

Sarma indicated that the survey process is expected to be completed by September 15 and reinforced a commitment to transparency throughout the assessment. The Chief Minister assured that flood-affected individuals would have access to the detailed list of families included in the survey.

Furthermore, provisions have been made for individuals whose names may not be included in the initial survey. Those affected will have the opportunity to come forward and ensure their inclusion after the survey is completed, thereby reinforcing the commitment to an equitable response to the disaster.
