In her address on the evening of August 14, prior to India’s 80th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu outlined the government’s vision for a developed India by the year 2047. She stated that public examinations are crucial opportunities for students and reiterated ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing the clarity, security, and reliability of these assessments. These initiatives are part of a broader agenda to protect the educational futures of students, which requires collaborative efforts between governmental bodies and society.

The President stated that students are vital to India’s trajectory and that adequate measures must be taken to safeguard their current and future academic prospects. She acknowledged the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency in the educational system while highlighting the importance of fair opportunities for all youths.

Addressing the nation, she noted how significant infrastructural developments and digital advancements have contributed to India’s position as one of the fastest-growing major economies globally. She expressed gratitude towards various sectors, including agriculture and technology, for their contributions to this progress.

Empowerment of Women and Youth Emphasised

Throughout her address, President Murmu placed considerable emphasis on women’s empowerment. She highlighted successful initiatives such as self-help groups and the Lakhpati Didi programme, noting that these projects have substantially enriched the lives of countless women. She also referred to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, enacted in 2023, which aims to reserve a minimum of 33 per cent of seats for women in legislative bodies.

Given that 65 per cent of the Indian populace is under the age of thirty-five, she labelled the youth as the nation’s most significant asset. The President conveyed her confidence in their potential, emphasising the government’s role in opening new avenues for employment and entrepreneurship within this demographic.

The President acknowledged that women from diverse fields, including military and agriculture, are increasingly taking on significant roles, thereby contributing to economic self-reliance. She remarked that the number of women involved in entrepreneurial ventures funded through the MUDRA Yojana is notably rising, marking a shift towards gender equity in business.

Commitment to Sustainable Development and Global Peace

President Murmu articulated the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, citing initiatives like the Life Mission, which underscore the importance of ecological conservation. She reinforced a vision of foreign policy grounded in the principles of global peace and dialogue, exemplified by the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—meaning “the world is one family.”

In discussing India’s role on the international stage, she emphasised the importance of adhering to a rules-based global order and called for appropriate representation of the Global South within international bodies. She acknowledged the country’s growing influence and partnerships through free trade agreements and global engagements.

Furthermore, the President stated India’s dedication to addressing global challenges through balanced diplomacy. She highlighted the nation’s efforts to provide humanitarian support and foster cooperation, even in times of conflict, thereby reinforcing India’s reputation as a reliable partner on the world stage.
