The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has sanctioned the advance release of Rs 2,117.85 crore from the Central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to support states impacted by floods amid the ongoing southwest monsoon of 2026. This funding aims to provide immediate assistance to regions facing severe disruptions due to adverse weather conditions.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), states that will benefit from this assistance include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Each of these states has been allocated funds as part of the first instalment for the financial year 2026-27, with Arunachal Pradesh receiving Rs 44.55 crore, Assam receiving Rs 379.35 crore, and both Gujarat and Maharashtra being allotted Rs 500 crore each.

The MHA noted that the urgency of the need for resources justified the relaxation of documentary requirements to expedite this support. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to promptly addressing the needs of those affected by recent flooding.

Restoration Efforts in Additional States

Himachal Pradesh and Odisha have also been granted financial aid, receiving Rs 193.95 crore and Rs 500 crore respectively as part of the second instalment of the SDRF. Both states had previously received the first instalment for the current fiscal year, enabling them to qualify for this additional support.

In total, seven states are reportedly facing challenges due to flooding, with Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Nagaland having received the first instalment of SDRF funds for 2026-27. The Home Minister’s approval for this second tranche further underscores the government’s intent to enhance relief measures that are essential for effective restoration in these regions.

Through these financial provisions, the MHA aims to ensure the timely availability of funds that are critical for relief operations. Continuous monitoring and assistance are anticipated as the situation evolves in these affected areas.

Government’s Coordination with State Authorities

The Home Ministry has underscored its active role in monitoring the flood situation in close collaboration with state authorities since the onset of the monsoon season. This comprehensive oversight allows for coordinated responses, facilitating seamless assistance from the central government to the states.

In addition to financial aid, the Central government has been proactive in extending logistical support and pre-deploying National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams wherever necessary. This strategic deployment aims to bolster the rescue and rehabilitation efforts in the most severely affected areas.

To further assess the extent of damage caused by the floods, Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) have been sent to Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The MHA has reported that two IMCT visits have already occurred in Assam due to the severity of the situation. In response to a request from the Nagaland government, plans are also underway to establish an IMCT for that state.
