TMC Leader Jahangir Khan’s Wife Arrested for Allegedly Plotting Attack on Police Station

The West Bengal Police apprehended Sarina Bibi, the spouse of detained Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan, on Saturday. She was reportedly captured for allegedly orchestrating a plan to forcibly secure Khan’s release by storming a police station in Falta. Bibi was arrested in South 24 Parganas after supposedly evading law enforcement following a protest earlier in the week advocating for her husband’s freedom.

Authorities indicated that Sarina Bibi was a primary conspirator behind the alleged scheme aimed at liberating Khan from custody. Her arrest coincides with rising tensions in the area, particularly after a significant demonstration occurred on June 16, where a sizeable crowd gathered to demand Khan’s release.

Protests and Dispersal of the Crowd

On June 16, a large assembly of individuals took to the streets of Falta, driven by demands for Jahangir Khan’s immediate release. Reports suggest that Bibi played a leading role in this protest, which sought to march towards the local police station. In response to the situation, police, along with personnel from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), intervened to disperse the gathering before they could reach their intended destination.

Following the demonstration, footage surfaced on various social media platforms, appearing to show protesters fleeing into nearby water bodies while being pursued by security forces. This incident has heightened the focus on Bibi’s alleged actions, prompting police to take serious measures in addressing the unrest.

The police have stated that Bibi was reportedly engaged in organising multiple protests in the region following her husband’s arrest, which they allege was part of her attempt to disrupt the peace. A formal case was subsequently registered against her following the events of June 16. In total, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident.

Context of Jahangir Khan’s Arrest

The backdrop to this situation involves Jahangir Khan’s prior arrest by the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) near the Nepal border on June 8. Khan had been on the run for several weeks before his apprehension. He is wanted in various cases, including allegations of election tampering, which involves reportedly placing tape over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) symbols during electoral processes in the South 24 Parganas constituency.

Fielded by the Trinamool Congress to contest from Falta, Khan withdrew from the election race on the eve of the polls. As it stands, there are at least seven First Information Reports (FIRs) against him filed at the Falta police station, alleging widespread electoral malpractice in the constituency.

Khan, who had gained notoriety under the alias ‘Pushpa’, was reportedly attempting to flee the country at the time of his capture, which has drawn significant media attention. Following his arrest, law enforcement has initiated several operations in Falta, aimed at dismantling his alleged criminal network and restoring calm to the region, according to police statements.
