Thenhi village in Dhamtari district, Chhattisgarh, has emerged as a beacon of energy self-reliance with the successful installation of a community solar plant. This initiative falls under the Prime Minister’s ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’, aimed at promoting clean energy solutions in rural areas. The community solar plant has a capacity of 142 kW, marking a significant milestone for the village.

The implementation of the solar plant allows 71 families in Thenhi to access solar power at no cost, thus alleviating their electricity expenses significantly. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to expanding renewable energy sources in underprivileged regions.

According to reports from local authorities, Thenhi has become the first village in Dhamtari district to host a community solar plant. The direct impact of this project is evident as it provides a sustainable energy solution to local households, promoting both environmental and economic benefits.

Impact of the Solar Initiative on Local Households

The installation of the community solar plant is expected to benefit approximately 72 families, according to Indra Naveen Singh, the Additional Collector of Dhamtari. These families will receive free electricity, which is likely to enhance their quality of life while supporting the village’s transition towards self-reliance in energy generation.

This initiative not only reduces the financial burden associated with electricity bills but also encourages other villages to explore similar renewable energy projects. With the success of Thenhi serving as a model, local administration plans to replicate this solar project in additional villages within the Nagri block.

Dhamtari Collector Abinash Mishra highlighted that the community solar initiative at Thenhi is just the beginning. As part of a broader strategy, plans are in place to install solar plants in 25 other villages across the Dhamtari district. This expansion reflects the government’s aim to enhance energy self-sufficiency throughout rural regions.

The district administration is optimistic that the model established in Thenhi will attract interest from other villages, encouraging them to adopt similar clean energy solutions. By expanding access to renewable energy, the programme aims to foster sustainable development in rural areas, thus contributing towards the overall energy goals of the region.
