Uddhav Thackeray, the chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), has strongly condemned the police actions against student protesters, likening these incidents to the historical “Jallianwala Bagh” massacre. This statement was made during a media interaction on August 8, where the former Chief Minister accused the central government of suppressing the aspirations of the youth through severe measures. Thackeray emphasised that rather than providing support to the younger generation, the administration opted for brutal enforcement tactics.

He highlighted the alarming situation faced by protesters, mentioning that they were being fired upon with pellet guns and subjected to baton charges. Such actions, he claimed, parallel some of the most notorious moments in India’s history, calling into question the government’s approach towards the youth. “The entire opposition and the nation ask the Prime Minister and the Home Minister why they are enforcing such atrocities on the youth,” he stated while questioning the government’s accountability.

Thackeray went on to assert that the Prime Minister remains silent on these pressing issues, suggesting a lack of courage to engage with the concerns raised by the youth. He called for substantial changes within the current political framework, criticising the leadership’s disengagement from pressing societal issues and young voices.

Allegations of Selective Engagement by the PM

In his remarks, Thackeray made pointed allegations against the Prime Minister for prioritising meetings with political defectors over the concerns of protesting students. He referred to these defectors as “traitors,” suggesting that the Prime Minister was giving them undue attention while neglecting the needs of the youth fighting for justice. “Does the Prime Minister not have time to meet with students, who are bravely demanding their rights? Instead, he chooses to engage with those who have betrayed their parties,” Thackeray alleged.

He accused the Prime Minister of a lack of empathy, suggesting that the statements made should have been directed towards the protesting youth instead of the defectors. “The phrase that should resonate with the youth, ‘I am with you,’ is absent from the Prime Minister’s rhetoric,” he said, illustrating a perceived disconnect between the government and its younger constituents.

Thackeray characterised the current administration as an “Instagram government,” implying that their engagement with the public, particularly the youth, is superficial and disconnected from real-world issues. He reflected on how contemporary governance appears to rely more on social media interactions rather than direct communication and action.

Youth’s Response to Political Leadership

Referring to a recent outreach initiative by RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat towards the younger generation, Thackeray noted that many youths are reportedly uninterested in his messages. He claimed that the younger demographic is increasingly frustrated with the current political leadership, refusing to listen to figures like Bhagwat. Thackeray cited responses from the students, suggesting that the efforts to connect with them are not being well-received.
