NITI Aayog Member Dr Srinivas Advocates Nutrition and Lifestyle in Clinical Training

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dr M. Srinivas, a member of the NITI Aayog, has emphasised the necessity for a transformation in healthcare delivery by advocating for the inclusion of nutrition and lifestyle factors in both clinical practice and medical education. Addressing the “Lifestyle & Diet: Nutrition, Wellness and Clinical Practice” symposium hosted by the Department of Physiology at AIIMS New Delhi, he stressed the importance of preparing future healthcare professionals to tackle evolving nutritional challenges in India.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Food Future Foundation, aimed to encourage robust dialogue among various stakeholders in healthcare and nutrition. Dr Srinivas highlighted that integrating these elements into medical curricula is critical for strengthening preventive healthcare and producing well-rounded medical practitioners. His remarks called for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to produce actionable recommendations that may enhance the national approach to health.

Contributors at the symposium included leading clinicians, nutrition experts, medical educators, and policymakers, among whom were Dr Nikhil Tandon, Director of AIIMS New Delhi, and Mr Pawan Agarwal, Founder and CEO of the Food Future Foundation. Their discussions underscored the need for emerging scientific evidence to reshape both medical education and clinical practice in the context of nutrition.

Release of New Textbook on Nutrition and Lifestyle

A significant feature of the symposium was the unveiling of the textbook “Nutrition, Diet & Lifestyle: Learning and Teaching Diet, Food, Nutrition & Lifestyle in Clinical Practice.” Edited by Dr Raj Kumar Yadav, Dr Alexander Thomas, and Mr Pawan Agarwal, the textbook aims to serve as a vital resource for medical education in these crucial areas. Dr Srinivas noted in the foreword that the current scientific consensus underscores the vital role of food and lifestyle in health outcomes, yet these topics remain insufficiently represented in medical curricula.

The textbook is designed to integrate knowledge of physiology with nutrition and lifestyle medicine, aiming to equip future healthcare professionals with an understanding of how daily food and lifestyle choices can affect health and disease management. Dr Srinivas expressed optimism that the publication would catalyse an enhanced focus on nutrition and lifestyle in medical education throughout India.

Dr Ratna Sharma, Head of the Department of Physiology at AIIMS, remarked on how advancements in nutrition science necessitate corresponding changes in medical education. Dr Raj Kumar Yadav reiterated the importance of combining traditional medical treatment with nutrition and lifestyle counselling as part of comprehensive patient care.

Discussion of Nutritional Science and Public Health

The symposium also featured a scientific session focused on food reformulation strategies, specifically regarding the role of monosodium glutamate (MSG) in reducing sodium intake without sacrificing taste. The discussions included insights from Dr Miro Smriga, Chairman of the International Glutamate Technical Committee, who shared international examples of evidence-based reformulation practices improving public health outcomes.

Scholars and specialists contributed to the discourse, including findings from recent systematic reviews indicating the safety of MSG for diverse populations, including infants and pregnant women. This aspect of the symposium highlighted a growing awareness and acceptance of nutritional components in medical practices.

Prominent figures from various institutions attended the event and actively engaged in discussions, which reflects a collective commitment to bridging the gap between nutrition science and clinical medicine. The interaction underscored a shared belief that integrating nutrition and lifestyle medicine within medical education is vital for promoting a preventive and patient-centric healthcare system in India.
