Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that fans will be granted free public admission to the upcoming two-match Test series against India. This initiative is an effort to attract large crowds to the matches, offering cricket fans across the nation, as well as visitors, the chance to enjoy high-profile Test cricket without the barrier of ticket costs. The matches, featuring Shubman Gill’s Indian team, are expected to draw significant attention as they form part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle from 2025 to 2027.

The first Test will take place at the scenic Galle International Cricket Stadium from August 15 to August 19. Following this, the second Test will be held at the historic Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo from August 23 to August 27. By eliminating ticket prices, SLC aims to enhance the overall experience of Test cricket and attract families and young aspiring players to witness the event live.

Access Points for Spectators

For the smooth entry of fans, specific access points have been designated at each venue. Spectators attending the first Test in Galle can enter the stadium through Gate No. 4. In Colombo, for the second Test, free access will be available via Gates 3, 4, 5, and 7. The organisation is actively promoting this open invitation as a way to foster a deeper connection between the sport and the community, particularly among younger audiences.

In a context where Test cricket has struggled to attract significant crowds, especially in the subcontinent, SLC’s decision to forgo gate fees signifies a commitment to revitalising the sport’s atmosphere. The organisation hopes to fill the stands and recreate the traditional ambience of Test matches, including the accompaniment of the local papare music.

Current Series Update and Warm-Up Match

The Indian cricket team’s tour commenced officially on August 7, 2026, with the first day of their three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) Ground in Colombo. Regular captain Shubman Gill did not participate due to a minor injury to his right ring finger.

In the warm-up match, Sri Lanka XI opted to bat first, capitalising on early momentum with strong performances from Nishan Madushka, who scored 66 runs, and Ravindu Rasantha, who contributed 71 runs. However, India’s slow bowlers made a solid comeback after lunch, with spinners Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Manav Suthar each taking two wickets, effectively curbing the scoring rate of the Sri Lankan side.

Despite a determined half-century from captain Sonal Dinusha, India managed to limit Sri Lanka XI to a total of 363 runs as play concluded on Day 1. The ongoing warm-up match is intended to provide the Indian team with valuable practice ahead of the Test series, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting encounter between the two sides.
