Allegations of gang rape have surfaced from the Nanoor area of West Bengal’s Birbhum district, where a woman was allegedly abducted from her home late at night and assaulted. The survivor later attempted suicide by consuming poison and is currently undergoing treatment at Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital.

The case came to light on Saturday after a formal complaint was lodged at Nanoor Police Station. Police have arrested one accused and launched a search operation to trace others allegedly involved.

According to police and family sources, the incident occurred between 12:00 midnight and 1:00 am on August 5. The woman had reportedly stepped out of her room when a group of youths allegedly scaled the boundary wall of her house and overpowered her.

She was allegedly gagged and dragged a short distance away, where the assault took place. The assailants reportedly threatened her with dire consequences if she raised an alarm.

Hearing distress sounds, the woman’s husband rushed out, prompting the accused to flee the scene immediately, sources said. Local residents later gathered after becoming aware of the incident.

Family members have alleged that the woman had been facing harassment from some local youths for a prolonged period but had not reported the matter earlier due to fear of social stigma and concerns over family reputation.

Survivor attempts suicide, condition stabilises

Traumatised by the incident, the woman consumed poison soon after. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition and admitted to Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital. Doctors attending to her said that while her physical condition has stabilised, she continues to remain under severe psychological distress.

The victim’s family has also alleged that they have been receiving death threats even after filing the police complaint. According to them, relatives of the accused have warned them to withdraw the case, allegedly threatening harm to their children. Police officials said these allegations are being taken seriously and are under separate investigation.

Officials confirmed that one of the prime suspects has been arrested, while operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused. Investigators are also examining all aspects of the case, including the alleged threats to the victim’s family.

The incident has raised fresh concerns regarding women’s safety and law-and-order in the region, with further developments expected as the investigation progresses.
