Spain Thrash Saudi Arabia 4-0 as Yamal Shines and Oyarzabal Bags Brace

The CSR Journal Magazine

Spain displayed a remarkable performance, defeating Saudi Arabia 4-0 in their Group H match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, held in Atlanta. Following a goalless draw against Cape Verde in their first game, Spain rebounded decisively, showcasing their potential in the tournament. The match featured standout contributions from young talent Lamine Yamal and forward Mikel Oyarzabal, who both played pivotal roles in the victory.

Early Breakthrough by Yamal

The Spanish side established control from the start, effectively pressuring Saudi Arabia. The breakthrough came in the 10th minute when the 18-year-old Lamine Yamal scored from close range, having been set up by Oyarzabal. This goal marked an important milestone for Yamal, as he became the eighth-youngest player to score in FIFA World Cup history, achieving this feat at 18 years and 343 days old.

Oyarzabal’s Brace Extends the Lead

Spain continued to dominate throughout the first half, and their efforts were rewarded again in the 21st minute. Oyarzabal reacted quickly in the penalty area to net the second goal, capitalizing on a moment of confusion. Just three minutes later, he struck again, taking advantage of a deft touch from Dani Olmo, extending the lead to 3-0. Saudi Arabia found it increasingly difficult to deal with Spain’s relentless attack. Oyarzabal almost completed a hat-trick before halftime, but his shot hit the crossbar.

Own Goal Seals Saudi Arabia’s Fate

The match effectively concluded four minutes into the second half when Spanish defender Marc Cucurella’s cross deflected off Saudi defender Hassan Altambakti, resulting in an own goal that pushed Spain’s advantage to 4-0. With this commanding lead, Spain managed the game comfortably and began making substitutions to rest key players. Saudi Arabia struggled to pose any significant threats, with Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon having little to contend with throughout the match.

Spain Tops Group H Standings

In stoppage time, Ferran Torres thought he had scored Spain’s fifth goal, but it was disallowed for offside following a VAR review. Nonetheless, the comprehensive victory allowed Spain to secure an important revival in their World Cup campaign. Following this game, Spain ascended to the top of Group H with four points from two matches. Uruguay follows in second place, while Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde occupy third and fourth places, respectively, in the Group H rankings.
