On August 5, 2026, former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot visited Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur to meet Shubham Rewar, a student leader who has been on a hunger strike for the past 15 days. Rewar’s health had reportedly deteriorated, prompting his hospital admission. The hunger strike aims to advocate for the long-delayed student union elections in Rajasthan.

During his visit, Gehlot expressed concern for Rewar’s condition and insisted on the importance of the elections that have been in demand for a significant time. He questioned the government’s lack of action regarding these elections, noting, “It is beyond comprehension why the government is not conducting them.” He emphasised that this issue has been a persistent demand among Rajasthan’s youth.

Gehlot, recognising the role of student politics, shared that he too emerged from a background of campus elections, stating, “Think of how many people have risen through student politics.” He highlighted the potential impact of student leadership on broader political landscapes, reflecting on how student unions have been pivotal in shaping political dynamics in the region.

Concerns Over Health and Call for Solidarity

Throughout the meeting, Gehlot underlined the seriousness of Rewar’s fasting, noting his decision to stop drinking water. The Congress leader reportedly urged Rewar to end the hunger strike for health reasons, while maintaining commitment to support the cause for student union elections. Gehlot explained that even if the situation does not yield an immediate positive response, it is important to continue advocating collectively for the cause.

Moreover, Gehlot reaffirmed that support for the elections transcends party lines, calling for students from all backgrounds to join the movement. He expressed belief that the entire student community would rally for the elections, even mentioning students from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He criticised the current government’s inability to respond adequately to such pressing demands, asserting that the Chief Minister should be more receptive.

In a social media post, Gehlot elaborated on his encouragement for Rewar to end the fast due to his deteriorating health, reiterating that the BJP government’s response to youth issues is unsatisfactory. He posted that he personally ensured Rewar received water during the visit, emphasising the need for the government to be sensitive to the demands of the youth.

After Gehlot’s visit, student leader Shubham Rewar expressed gratitude for the support extended by the former Chief Minister.
