The Indian government announced that seventy-five per cent of the initial cohort of Agniveers, who were recruited under the Agnipath scheme, are anticipated to complete their four-year tenure in the Armed Forces. This statement was made by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, during a recent session of the Rajya Sabha held on Wednesday.

Rai communicated that, in accordance with the government’s policies, a provision has been established to reserve fifty per cent of vacancies for the positions of Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman within the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and the Assam Rifles for those Agniveers seeking post-service employment.

He emphasised that the current first batch of Agniveers has not yet reached the conclusion of their service term, questioning the progress thus far. The expectations concerning their number of exits were based on predefined provisions set forth by the Agnipath scheme.

Reservation for Ex-Agniveers Introduced

In a prior announcement to the Lok Sabha, Nityanand Rai detailed that former Agniveers would be granted eligibility for a fifty per cent reservation in postings for Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman roles in the CAPFs and Assam Rifles. This initiative aims to create a distinct category called “ex-Agniveers” specifically for these roles.

This reservation scheme ensures that half of the available positions are dedicated to candidates who have completed their service under the Agnipath programme, thus facilitating their transition into civilian careers. Such measures aim to support the employment of military personnel after their tenure concludes.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced in 2022, recruits young individuals aged between 17.5 and 21 years, facilitating their enlistment in the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a fixed duration of four years.

Structure and Support for Agniveers

Under the stipulations of the Agnipath scheme, a maximum of twenty-five per cent of each batch will be retained for ongoing permanent service. The selection for continued service is contingent upon various criteria, including merit, medical fitness, and the operational needs of the respective armed forces.

The personnel who do not continue beyond the four years are provided with a severance package alongside skill certificates and additional support aimed at enhancing their employability in the civilian sector. These initiatives are designed to aid the successful integration of Agniveers back into society.

The government’s reservation policy within the CAPFs and Assam Rifles forms part of a larger strategy to create pathways for Agniveers post the completion of their military engagement, reinforcing the commitment to support their future career prospects.
