Safety Concerns Raised at Delhi Government Schools

The CSR Journal Magazine

The safety of government schools in Delhi has come under scrutiny following inspections that revealed significant concerns. In Jasola Vihar, a building has been deemed unsafe and is set for demolition, while in Sagarpur, another school continues to operate despite visible structural deterioration. The situation raises serious questions about the safety conditions of educational institutions in the capital.

Varying Conditions in Different Schools

The Jasola Vihar school has made headlines as its building, constructed in 2008, was recently declared dilapidated. The facility contained 21 rooms, including 17 classrooms, but has now been fully vacated to protect the students. They have been relocated to other parts of the campus, emphasising the urgent need for action and the risk that could have occurred had the issues not been detected in time.

Conversely, the Sagarpur school remains fully operational. However, the building, established in 2017, is already exhibiting signs of wear and tear. Cracks in the walls and loose floor tiles suggest that maintenance may be lacking. The continued occupancy of the school presents a pressing need for regular assessments to ensure the safety of children who spend many hours there each day.

When visited, the Sagarpur school had students absent due to a holiday, but the visible deterioration brought to light the importance of ongoing structural monitoring. It remains a concern that the quality of construction may not meet the required standards necessary for safe learning environments.

Introduction of 3D Structural Audits

In response to the highlighted concerns, the Delhi government is initiating a 3D structural audit of its schools. This advanced strategy aims to replace traditional inspection methods with detailed digital scans of school buildings. The objective is to create precise three-dimensional models that reflect the condition of classrooms, walls, roofing, and essential facilities.

Officials assert that this initiative will allow for remote assessments and help identify issues before they escalate into serious safety hazards. The move is viewed as a significant step toward modernising the monitoring of school infrastructures across the city.

Delhi’s Education Minister, Ashish Sood, has expressed confidence in the 3D audit’s ability to improve building safety assessments. He emphasised that the government prioritises children’s safety and has already moved students from buildings deemed unsafe to secure alternatives. The development is a proactive approach aimed at preventing future incidents through timely detection of structural problems.
