The recent police action against sanitation workers on strike in Barnala has drawn sharp criticism from BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu. Bittu stated that the situation of Sanitation workers in Barnala is dire, labelling the treatment received by members of the Valmiki community as regrettable. He indicated that the government’s inaction has exacerbated tensions, leaving the workers without recourse as they demand better wages and regular employment contracts.

During a press interaction, he said, “The way sanitation workers were beaten is unfortunate,” implying that there has been a significant oversight on part of the state administration in handling the protests.

Government Response to Allegations

In response to the alleged use of excessive force against the sanitation workers, the Punjab government has taken definitive action. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Satbir Singh Bains was suspended on July 24, 2026, following the incident. This decision was reportedly made to address concerns raised about the police’s conduct during the protests.

Additionally, the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK), through Vice Chairperson Hardeep Singh Gill, has sought a comprehensive report from the Punjab government within seven days. This request was prompted by various media reports highlighting the police’s alleged brutality towards the protesting workers.

In his correspondence with the Punjab Chief Secretary, Gill stressed the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of sanitation workers. He underscored the need for a serious examination of any allegations involving violations of their rights, affirming that such matters merit urgent attention.

Recent Developments in Punjab Politics

On the same day as these statements, Ravneet Singh Bittu announced his resignation from the position of Union Minister of State for Railways, effective after his Rajya Sabha tenure ended on June 21, 2026. Bittu’s political career has included serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha from August 2024 until June 2026, representing the state of Rajasthan.

This resignation arrives as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensifies its preparations for the upcoming Punjab Legislative Assembly elections slated for 2027. Bittu, who is a grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress member Beant Singh, is expected to play a pivotal role in the party’s strategy moving forward.
