Priyank Kharge, the Karnataka Minister, has initiated criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) concerning its Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. This campaign encourages citizens to display the national flag at their homes in anticipation of Independence Day. Kharge’s statements focus particularly on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its approach to the Indian National Flag.

In a post on X, Kharge argued that the BJP should commence the campaign at the RSS’s Nagpur headquarters, pointing out that the RSS did not display the Indian National Flag there for over five decades following India’s independence. The flag was officially hoisted at this headquarters only in 2002, which Kharge highlighted as a significant lapse in patriotic expression.

Kharge’s comments raise broader questions regarding the BJP’s narrative of patriotism and the RSS’s preference for the Bhagwa Dhwaj, or saffron flag, over the national Tricolour. He urged the BJP to clarify why its ideological parent has historically prioritised this flag instead of the national emblem, considering its implications for national unity.

Critiques of the BJP’s Patriotism Narrative

In his posts, Kharge has also challenged the frequency and significance of the Tricolour being carried during RSS route marches. He asked how many of these events have featured swayamsevaks proudly displaying the Indian National Flag in full uniform, suggesting that this absence raises questions about the organisation’s commitment to patriotism.

His remarks underscore a perceived inconsistency in how the BJP and RSS engage with symbols of national identity. Kharge has posited that while the BJP issues ‘Desh Bhakt’ certificates to various individuals, its own practices seem not to align with this designation of patriotism. He thus concludes that there is a need for clarity regarding the party’s portrayal of its national commitment.

These criticisms come in a context where the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has gained momentum, being promoted extensively as a movement to instil patriotism among individuals. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022, the programme forms part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, which marks the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.
