Raj Thackeray, the chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), has urged party members and supporters to join the ‘Tiranga March’ scheduled for July 26 in Mumbai. This initiative aims to demonstrate support for students protesting against alleged discrepancies in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination as well as the government’s handling of related issues. In a post shared on ‘X’, Thackeray described the march as a display of unity with the students and their families, emphasising the need to protest against the government’s purported efforts to quash these demonstrations.

Thackeray characterised the rally as “completely non-political” and repeatedly urged participants to avoid displaying party flags or chanting slogans endorsing political figures, including himself or Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena (UBT). He stressed that the focus should solely be on the students and their demands, stating that the presence of party symbols or slogans in the rally is inappropriate.

The MNS chief asserted, “This is a ‘Tiranga March.’ It is entirely non-political. There will be no political flags or slogans in support of any leaders here. The aim is to express criticism of the government and to voice support for the students and youth across the nation.” He further conveyed that even as he and Uddhav Thackeray coordinate this march, the attention must remain steadfastly on the student body.

Message of Unity and Support

Thackeray mentioned that the gathering aims to communicate a powerful message to students and their families throughout the country, reassuring them that they are not isolated in their struggle. He remarked, “This rally is for those students who stand strong against the government and their families, and it is a signal to those who cannot travel to Delhi or come to Mumbai to protest that all of Maharashtra stands in solidarity with them.” This indicates a push for broader support and recognition of students’ challenges.

The leader also appealed for MNS party workers to help facilitate the attendance of students and their families, underlining the importance of maintaining their safety during the event. He encouraged supporters to “bring as many students and their parents as possible, take care of them during the rally, and ensure they return home safely.” This highlights a focus on community and protective measures for those participating.

Thackeray conveyed a cautionary message regarding potential disruptions, instructing workers to ensure any troublemakers are reported to the police. He suggested that party members should be proactive in managing any unruly behaviour or harassment directed at attendees, especially vulnerable groups such as women and young girls. His comments implied a readiness on the part of the supporters to maintain order and protect participants.

Mobilisation for the Event

Expressing optimism about the turnout, Thackeray called on his supporters to convene near the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Shivaji Park at 10 a.m. on the day of the march. His statements reflect a confident anticipation of widespread participation, which underscores the growing sentiment surrounding the NEET issue.

In a related development, Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), reiterated the party’s commitment to continuing protests following the conclusion of social activist Sonam Wangchuk’s 26-day hunger strike. Dipke asserted that agitation will persist until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. This signals ongoing unrest and activism in response to educational policies and their perceived inadequacies.

The planned Tiranga March is not just a political statement, but a collective assertion of students’ rights and grievances regarding educational fairness in India. It underscores the depth of commitment from various organisations and individuals in voicing concerns over educational practices in the country.
