Raj Thackeray, the chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and Uddhav Thackeray, chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), have raised significant concerns regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the NEET-UG paper leak and its impact on students. During a press conference on July 23 in Mumbai, they highlighted the intense pressure faced by young individuals in India and called for accountability from the Central government.

Raj Thackeray drew a stark comparison to the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai to stress the need for the resignation of the education minister. He stated, “The kind of pressure being exerted on students today is immense. When the BJP was in opposition, they demanded resignations in similar crises. After the 26/11 attacks, the Home Minister was removed from his position. This is precisely what the students are demanding now.” This statement reflects an escalating sentiment among students regarding the current situation.

The MNS leader further lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to the ongoing crisis, noting that a tweet from the Prime Minister is insufficient. He remarked that Modi had previously shown reluctance to engage with the public during critical situations, including the farmers’ protests and the ongoing issues in Manipur. Raj Thackeray asserted that a dialogue with students should have occurred, expressing disappointment over the government’s indifferent approach.

Allegations of Police Misconduct and Increased Protests

Raj Thackeray also brought to attention a video allegedly depicting a police officer threatening a student, suggesting severe misconduct within law enforcement. He shared his concerns, stating, “I have sent a video to the Commissioner where a policeman threatens a student by saying he would plant a packet of powder in his bag. Does our police carry such items for framing innocent citizens? Immediate and strict action must be taken against such behaviour.”

Uddhav Thackeray emphasised that the NEET controversy holds national significance beyond just the examination itself. He referred to a recent encounter with an individual from Bihar who conveyed the hardships faced by students, asserting the need for a collective fight against these issues. Uddhav described a scene where students were subject to violence during protests, indicating serious concerns regarding the treatment of youth activists.

Echoing Raj’s sentiments, Uddhav called for a comprehensive change in governance, expressing that the issues at hand relate to the entire Union Cabinet, not just the Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He condemned the excessive force reportedly used against protesting students, questioning the legitimacy of individuals impersonating police officers who participated in aggressive actions.

Calls for Unity in Upcoming Protests

In his closing remarks, Uddhav Thackeray announced plans for an upcoming protest that aims to unite people across party lines, declaring it a non-partisan demonstration focused solely on national interest. He stated, “Only the Tricolour will be visible in this movement; no political party flags will be permitted.” This indicates a shift towards collective action aimed at addressing the current educational and governmental failures.

Both leaders’ remarks underscore the urgency of the situation and highlight a growing concern over the welfare of students amidst ongoing bureaucratic indifference. Their statements reflect a broader frustration with the government’s handling of educational issues, urging the need for immediate reforms and accountability.
