The political tension in Maharashtra has escalated regarding alleged industrial relocation and declining infrastructure in Chakan, a vital manufacturing area. The Opposition has accused the state government of neglecting essential civic issues while the ruling coalition has dismissed claims of an industrial exodus. This conflict surfaced following comments from NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar, who highlighted significant traffic congestion and frequent water shortages in Chakan.

Pawar asserted that over 20 industrial units employing more than 2,000 workers were contemplating moving their operations due to the ongoing infrastructure challenges. He cited parliamentary statistics indicating that 36,211 private companies had ceased operations in the state within the previous five years. The NCP leader called for immediate interventions to enhance infrastructure in the region.

Government Defends Economic Stability

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis countered the Opposition’s claims, arguing that around 76 per cent of reported closures pertained to defunct companies that had never been active and were removed from the records during routine audits. Fadnavis emphasised that Maharashtra maintained its position as the nation’s industrial powerhouse with nearly 400,000 operational enterprises, alongside the most significant number of new corporate registrations.

Moreover, Fadnavis announced the establishment of a high-level, multi-agency task force aiming to resolve the infrastructural dilemmas in Chakan, detailing both short-term and long-term strategies. This initiative is intended to cater to the pressing needs of local businesses while addressing the complaints related to the state’s infrastructure.

The Chief Minister maintained that Maharashtra continues to attract substantial business investments, a claim supported by the existence of numerous thriving enterprises within its borders.

Opposition Increases Pressure Over Job Losses

The Opposition has intensified its scrutiny of the state government, linking the reported business closures and potential relocations to the administration’s management of infrastructure and investment opportunities. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule highlighted that the data suggested that 36,112 companies had folded in Maharashtra, reiterating that even the closure of a single business is a matter worthy of serious concern.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray echoed these sentiments, asserting that more than 35,000 businesses had migrated out of the state over the past five years, including approximately 680 allegedly relocating to Gujarat. Thackeray questioned the government’s assertions regarding investment attractions, pointing to ongoing infrastructure inadequacies in Chakan and Nashik.

The political confrontation unfolds amidst broader discussions regarding the investment environment in Maharashtra. While the Opposition stresses the importance of addressing infrastructural shortcomings and the alleged outflow of industries, the state administration insists on its status as India’s premier destination for both business and new investments.

Industry Minister Engages With Local Entrepreneurs

Maharashtra’s Industry Minister, Uday Samant, firmly rejected accusations concerning the migration of manufacturing units. He stated, “The truth is that not a single company has migrated,” emphasising that he has been in dialogue with industry representatives in Chakan to fully grasp their concerns.

Samant announced plans to personally engage with entrepreneurs in Chakan on August 16, assuring them that he would remain involved until their operational issues were adequately addressed. This commitment is part of the government’s effort to retain industries within Maharashtra and bolster the state’s economic standing amidst heightened political criticism.

The ongoing discussions illustrate the significant political stakes surrounding Maharashtra’s infrastructure and industrial viability, with both sides striving to articulate their positions effectively in the public domain.
