Liverpool Finalises Minority Stake Sale to Consortium Involving Jeff Bezos

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Premier League club Liverpool FC has confirmed a definitive agreement with a consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to acquire a minority stake. This announcement was made by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club’s current owners. The consortium, named 1892 Holdings, is headed by Amit Bhatia, a former chairman of Queens Park Rangers. In addition to Bezos, the group comprises the Mittal Family Trusts, EE Capital, and the K5 Sports fund.

FSG’s Statement on the Partnership

Mike Gordon, the president of Fenway Sports Group, expressed optimism regarding the partnership. He stated that the consortium’s long-term vision aligns with their philosophy. Gordon acknowledged the value that Bhatia and his associates would bring to the club, highlighting their shared appreciation of Liverpool’s unique traits. It appears the stakeholders are poised to enhance the strong foundation already established by FSG since they acquired control of Liverpool in 2010.

A source familiar with the negotiations reported that the consortium aims to acquire approximately one-third of the club. Despite this investment, Fenway Sports Group will retain the majority share and continue to exercise operational control over Liverpool FC.

Bhatia has been appointed as the new vice chairman of the club and will become part of an expanded board alongside figures from the consortium, including Elaine Saverin representing EE Capital and Bryan Baum from K5 Sports. Notably, Jeff Bezos is not expected to have a seat on the board.

Statements from the New Stakeholders

The move comes after Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League in the previous season and seeks to strengthen its competitive edge as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. With new manager Andoni Iraola at the helm, the team aims to regain top form, starting their new season with an away match against Newcastle United on 23 August.

The partnership with 1892 Holdings is viewed as a strategic adjustment for Liverpool, as FSG looks to bolster its resources and capabilities through external investment. By integrating experienced stakeholders like Bhatia and others, the club hopes to elevate its operations and enhance its standing in both domestic and European football.
