Pregnant Woman in Telangana Dies by Suicide After Paternity Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 23-year-old pregnant woman has reportedly died by suicide in Medak district, Telangana. The incident occurred following alleged harassment from her husband, who questioned the paternity of their unborn child and demanded a DNA test. Police disclosed details of the case on June 29, 2026.

The deceased, identified as G Sushmita, was five months pregnant at the time of her death on June 25. She had been married to G Abhilash, a resident of Gadipeddapur village, for approximately 18 months. Sushmita was found deceased at her matrimonial home, prompting her family to raise concerns about the circumstances surrounding her passing.

Allegations of Harassment

According to a complaint lodged by Sushmita’s mother, Abhilash had allegedly subjected his wife to both physical and mental abuse. He is accused of persistently casting doubt on her character and, subsequently, on the paternity of their unborn child. Additionally, the complaint suggests the involvement of Abhilash’s mother in the reported harassment.

On June 23, the family had visited Sushmita’s in-laws to discuss arrangements for her seemantham, a traditional baby shower ceremony. Reports indicate that a disagreement broke out during this meeting, which culminated in Abhilash demanding a DNA test to confirm whether the unborn child was indeed his. Village elders intervened to de-escalate the situation temporarily.

Despite this intervention, two days later, Sushmita was discovered deceased in what police are investigating as a suicide. Her family alleges that the ongoing humiliation and harassment she faced were contributing factors that led her to take this tragic decision.

Legal Action and Police Investigation

In response to the complaint filed by Sushmita’s family, law enforcement has initiated legal proceedings under Sections 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Relevant sections concerning common intention have also been invoked.

Authorities have arrested Abhilash and his mother, both of whom are currently in judicial custody. Investigations are continuing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding Sushmita’s death and any additional evidence related to the allegations of harassment.

This incident has drawn attention to issues of domestic violence and the mental health of women in similar situations. The family and community are grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event, as they seek justice for Sushmita.
