PoJK Protests Escalate Over Alleged Civilian Killings, Activists Demand Justice

The CSR Journal Magazine

Protests have surged in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) following reports of civilian deaths due to gunfire from Pakistani security forces. Local activists and political figures have raised concerns regarding the treatment of protestors and called on the international community for intervention. The unrest comes as demonstrators demand accountability and an end to violent suppression of protests.

Mohammad Faheem Reshi, a socio-political activist and the Chairman of Greater Shahr-e-Khaas, expressed solidarity with those protesting in PoJK. He highlighted the connection between the people of Jammu and Kashmir and their counterparts across the border, remarking that such events ought to draw international attention. Reshi condemned what he termed as barbarity inflicted upon civilians who dare to voice their discontent.

He questioned the global media’s silence on these incidents, stating, “Where is the global media today? Why aren’t they raising their voices?” He urged a unified stance for justice, noting that protest is a fundamental human right, irrespective of the country where it occurs.

Dimensions of the Human Rights Crisis

As protests continue, demonstrators in PoJK are calling for civil rights and the cessation of forceful actions against those expressing dissent. Many are questioning the motives behind what they view as oppressive actions taken by the Pakistani authorities. Reshi raised critical queries regarding the ongoing repression in PoJK, expressing concern for what he described as a defenceless segment of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Why is Pakistan committing so much oppression against the defenceless part of Jammu and Kashmir? What justifies this?” he asked. He pointed out that these actions reflect a troubling pattern of oppression that has been historically seen in Kashmir as well, suggesting that both regions are intrinsically linked and deserve similar attention.

In response to the unrest, a substantial rally occurred in Rawalkote, PoJK, on June 7, 2023. Local political leaders and members of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) addressed the crowd, denouncing the government’s handling of the protests and demanding an independent investigation into the verified deaths and injuries among demonstrators.

Global Responses and Implications for Pakistan

Amnesty International has also condemned the crackdown on protests, alleging that the Pakistani government has employed excessive force and suppressed dissent ahead of regional elections. The organisation labelled these actions as unlawful and detrimental to the freedom of association and peaceful political engagement.

The condemnation from Amnesty underscores a broader call for accountability and justice for the affected families. Activists are pressing for international human rights organisations to respond robustly and advocate for an end to alleged human rights violations in PoJK.

Reshi reiterated the need for global awareness and involvement, encouraging individuals, including religious scholars, to join in condemning the situation. His remarks reflect a sense of urgency regarding the need for pressure on Pakistan to halt alleged acts of violence against civilians and uphold their rights.
