Odisha Horror: NGO Staff Attacked and Woman Molested Over False Kidnap Claims

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent assault of two NGO workers in Odisha has sparked significant concern. On June 16, a female worker and her male colleague were attacked in Kandulguda village, located in the Rayagada district. Locals, suspecting the pair of being child kidnappers, allegedly assaulted them. As per police reports, 16 individuals have been taken into custody in relation to this incident.

Details of the Attack

The incident unfolded when the NGO workers, both from outside Odisha, stopped in Kandulguda to request directions while travelling from Daringbadi to Thuamul Rampur in the Kalahandi district. During their interaction, they reportedly engaged with children and distributed biscuits, which led to suspicions among certain villagers. This quickly escalated into widespread rumours of the workers being child abductors, resulting in a mob gathering.

Her male colleague described the events that led them to Kandulguda, stating they had followed directions from Google Maps. He mentioned their lack of intention to visit the village outside of seeking navigational help. “Google Maps showed that route, so we were going that way, otherwise we wouldn’t have gone. The villagers were chasing us, and everyone in the village was standing with sticks,” he recalled, indicating the intensity of the situation they faced.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

In response to the violence, police have initiated investigations and have confirmed the arrest of 16 individuals so far. The Superintendent of Police for Rayagada, Raj Prasad, stated that some of the main suspects are included among those detained. Authorities have registered a criminal case under multiple sections, reflecting the seriousness of the attack.

The investigation is currently underway, involving scrutiny of local footage and witness testimonials to build a clearer picture of the incident. Police have assured the public that they are taking necessary measures to address mob violence and safeguard community members. The rapid spread of misinformation that led to this incident highlights the critical importance of accurate communication and vigilance in preventing such attacks.

The distressing nature of the attack has drawn attention to the safety of NGO workers, who often face challenges in their efforts to assist vulnerable communities. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for awareness and education within villages about the roles and intentions of NGO operatives.
