WhatsApp Users Report Accounts ‘Under Review’, Access Temporarily Restricted

The CSR Journal Magazine

Several WhatsApp users, including many in India, reported on Monday evening that their accounts had been unexpectedly placed “under review”, temporarily restricting access to the Meta-owned messaging platform. The issue triggered widespread complaints on social media, with users saying they had received no prior warning before their accounts were flagged.

WhatsApp acknowledged the reports and said it continuously works to detect abuse while protecting legitimate users. The company admitted that mistakes can occur during its enforcement process and said it aims to resolve such cases as quickly as possible.

Users Receive ‘Account in Review’ Notification

The issue began surfacing at around 8 pm IST, when affected users said they were unable to use WhatsApp’s features after receiving an in-app notification stating that their accounts were being reviewed for compliance with the platform’s Terms of Service.

The notification read: “Account in review. Date requested: 3 Aug 2026. Your account activity and device info is being checked to make sure it follows our terms of service. We will notify you of the result, typically within 24 hours.”

The message also included links directing users to information about responsible use of WhatsApp and guidance related to stolen phones and compromised accounts.

WhatsApp Responds to User Complaints

Responding to the reports, a WhatsApp spokesperson said the company regularly identifies and blocks accounts that attempt to misuse the platform while ensuring genuine users are protected.

“We are always working to stay ahead of those trying to abuse our service and ban accounts to help keep other users safe. Sometimes we get this wrong and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible to get people back to chatting,” the spokesperson said.

The company did not specify how many users were affected or whether the reviews were triggered by a technical glitch, an automated moderation system or a broader anti-spam exercise.

Cause of the Issue Remains Unclear

Several users said their accounts had been placed under review despite not engaging in any activity that would violate WhatsApp’s policies. Many questioned the restrictions on social media and sought clarification from the company.

WhatsApp has not confirmed whether the issue was limited to users in certain regions or if it affected accounts globally.

The company is yet to provide further details on the cause of the reviews or when affected users can expect the issue to be fully resolved.
