Prashant Kishor, the founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, has achieved a significant political milestone by winning the Bankipur assembly by-election on August 3. This victory marks a notable change in a constituency that has been under the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) control for nearly three decades. Kishor’s win is underscored by a margin of 19,324 votes, with him receiving 64,151 votes compared to the BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar, who garnered 44,827 votes.

The significance of this victory is accentuated by the fact that it is Kishor’s first electoral success since launching the Jan Suraaj Party. Just nine months previously, the party struggled to secure any seats during the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

According to the Election Commission, the by-poll saw a voter turnout of 34.24 per cent, which reflects the engagement of the local populace in this political event.

Impact on the BJP’s Position

The defeat in Bankipur poses a substantial challenge for the BJP, surpassing the implications of merely losing a seat. This constituency has been a stronghold for the party since 1995, rooted in the legacy of BJP leaders Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha and his son, Nitin Nabin, who is the current national president of the BJP.

Nabin had previously won the Bankipur seat by a considerable margin of over 50,000 votes in the last assembly elections, making Kishor’s victory a considerable upset to the ruling party. Bihar’s Chief Minister, Samrat Choudhary, conveyed his congratulations to Kishor, describing the election as a “grand festival of democracy.” He acknowledged the people’s choice in the Bankipur by-poll and wished Kishor the best as he embarks on this new chapter in his political career.

Kishor, reflecting on the outcome, emphasised that it represented a broader message from the people of Bihar to the central leadership of the BJP regarding the need for competent leadership in the state.
