Mother of Chandranath Rath Blames TMC for Son’s Murder Amid Rising Bengal Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The tragic killing of Chandranath Rath, a close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has sparked severe backlash against the Trinamool Congress (TMC). This incident took place in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, mere hours after his assassination. Rath’s mother, Hasirani Rath, has publicly accused the TMC of orchestrating the attack post their electoral defeat under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In an emotional statement to journalists, Hasirani Rath described her son’s death as a “planned attack,” imploring authorities to ensure justice. She expressed her desire for the perpetrators to face life imprisonment rather than capital punishment, emphasising her pain as a grieving mother. “I want the guilty to be punished,” she remarked, highlighting the intensity of her loss.

Events Leading to the Murder

Chandranath Rath, formerly an officer in the Indian Air Force, was attacked just past midnight on Wednesday night while travelling in his Scorpio SUV near Madhyamgram. According to police reports, his vehicle was overtaken by a Santro car, which then slowed down, allowing motorcycle-borne assailants to fire shots from close proximity. Investigators confirmed that around ten bullets struck Rath, affecting his chest, abdomen, and head.

Following the attack, he was transported to a private hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. The police have since detained over 1,100 individuals across the state in connection with the incident and have registered more than 200 FIRs pertaining to the killing.

While authorities are questioning three local individuals with prior criminal records, the main suspects remain at large. Adhikari has publicly described the incident as a “pre-planned murder,” asserting its impact as a personal loss for him, as well as urging party members to maintain peace during this tumultuous time.

Political Fallout and Response

In the wake of the tragic event, heightened tensions have arisen between the TMC and the BJP. BJP leader Arjun Singh accused TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee of having a role in orchestrating the attack on Rath. However, the TMC has categorically refuted these accusations, labelling the act of violence as heinous and maintaining that such actions have no place in a democratic society.

The ruling party has called for a thorough investigation, suggesting that it ought to be court-monitored to ensure transparency and accountability. This situation highlights the ongoing volatile political climate in West Bengal, with both parties exchanging accusations in the aftermath of the tragedy.

As investigations continue, the incident raises critical questions regarding political safety and the prevalence of violence in political rivalry. The authorities are focused on apprehending those responsible and uncovering the motivations behind this alarming act of violence. The community remains shaken as they call for justice for Chandranath Rath and hope for a resolution to the underlying tensions.
