The monsoon is anticipated to bring renewed rainfall to Delhi-NCR, with weather predictions indicating generally cloudy conditions on Friday, August 14. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected a broad range of rainfall across Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi through the day and into Saturday, August 15.

The latest updates suggest that Delhi will experience significant cloud cover, with light rain expected during both morning and evening hours. This pattern follows a period of warm weather marked by high humidity, which has made temperatures feel uncomfortable despite not showing extreme highs.

The maximum temperature for the day is expected to be around 34°C, while the minimum may drop to about 27°C. Rainfall chances continue into August 15, as the IMD anticipates further spells of light rain, particularly in the early morning and later in the day.

Factors Influencing Rainfall in the Region

The broader weather dynamics are currently favouring a wetter spell across northwest India, with the IMD forecasting widespread rainfall over the coming days. The monsoon trough, which is a critical component for organising rainfall, plays a significant role in this increased precipitation.

An active depression over coastal West Bengal is also contributing to the overall rainfall across eastern and central regions of India. This system has developed from a low-pressure area originating over the north Bay of Bengal and has shifted northwestward.

While a low-level circulation in southern Haryana has diminished, the overall monsoon conditions remain conducive for rain over the Delhi-NCR area. Despite this, the current forecast does not indicate the likelihood of heavy rain; rather, light rain is expected to dominate the weather scenario, with variations across the National Capital Region.

Current Rainfall Deficit and Future Expectations

The anticipated rainfall is expected to provide some respite from the current rainfall shortfall in Delhi, even though the light showers alone may not fully address the significant seasonal deficit. As of Thursday, August 13, data indicates that the region is facing a 20 per cent deficit since the monsoon’s onset on June 4.

According to the IMD, while the upcoming rainfall may alleviate some of this deficit, it is unlikely to completely rectify it, as the deluge projected seems to be primarily light. Notably, there are possibilities of heavier rainfall in certain areas, although this is not a universal expectation for the entire NCR.

In the next 36 hours, residents of Delhi-NCR can expect continued cloudy skies, with light and sporadic rain likely, distinct from a more severe downpour. The situation will be closely monitored as the IMD works to provide the latest updates for residents during this monsoon phase.
