Apple has initiated a process to inform users who may have fallen victim to mercenary spyware by dispatching threat notifications directly to iPhones. This initiative, which began this week, encompasses alerts aimed at individuals across 110 countries. The notifications appear on the Lock Screen and within the Settings app of affected devices, thereby enhancing visibility and accessibility for users.

In an updated support document released on August 13, Apple clarifies that these alerts are crafted to notify individuals who may have been specifically targeted by mercenary spyware. This type of spyware is noted to be significantly more complex than standard cyber threats and is typically aimed at a select, small demographic, often at considerable financial cost.

Apple assures users that, fortunately, the vast majority of individuals are unlikely to be targeted by such sophisticated cyber intrusions. However, the company states that Pegasus-like spyware attacks are highly concentrated and typically associated with activities by state actors or private entities engaged in spyware development, citing the NSO Group’s Pegasus as a prominent example.

Mechanisms Behind Apple’s Spyware Alerts

The identification process of potential spyware targeting is primarily conducted through Apple’s threat intelligence and internal investigations. The company refers to these indications as “high-confidence alerts,” although it acknowledges that it cannot guarantee absolute certainty in every detection case.

While Apple has not disclosed the precise criteria it employs for such alerts, the company has justified this confidentiality by stating that revealing details could enable spyware developers to modify their approaches, thus evading detection. Since the start of this initiative in 2021, Apple has issued notifications in over 150 countries.

Following this recent update, the notifications will now manifest directly on the iPhone’s Lock Screen, along with visibility in the iPhone’s Settings. This change not only aims to provide immediate awareness to users but also guides them on necessary protective actions for their devices.

Precautionary Measures And User Guidance

In conjunction with sending alerts, Apple also communicates via email to the address associated with the user’s Apple Account. Once the user logs in, a cautionary banner appears at the top of their account page. The alert informs users of a “mercenary spyware attack targeted at your iPhone” and includes advice on safeguarding their data and devices.

Users are strongly encouraged to enable Lockdown Mode and seek specialised assistance if they feel it is warranted. Alongside this, Apple stresses the necessity for users to remain vigilant against potential scams that may mimic these legitimate alerts.

A genuine notification from Apple will never request users to click links, open files, or share passwords and verification codes. To verify the authenticity of an alert, users should log in directly to account.apple.com rather than following links from emails or messages. A legitimate warning will be prominently displayed at the top of the account page after signing in.
