Ajinkya Rahane is embarking on a new phase of his cricket career by stepping into commentary after formally retiring from all forms of the game. He is set to make his debut in the commentary box during the Test series between India and Sri Lanka, which commences on August 15. The Sony Sports Network has officially welcomed Rahane to its commentary team, announcing his arrival on social media with enthusiasm, stating, “The magic hasn’t stopped, it’s just found a new home!”

Rahane will be involved with the Extraaa Innings team, where he is expected to share insights from his extensive playing experience. His new role follows the announcement of his retirement on July 30, marking a significant transition as he moves from being a player to a commentator.

The 38-year-old cricketer concluded a distinguished career that spanned 85 Tests, 90 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 20 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Throughout his Test career, he accumulated 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 centuries, showcasing his skill and determination on the field.

Continued Engagement with Cricket

Despite stepping away from professional cricket, Rahane’s association with the sport continues. He has taken on a new challenge by signing with the Amsterdam Flames as their marquee player in the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL), which is scheduled to run from August 26 to September 20. This engagement allows him to remain active in the cricketing landscape while exploring different formats of the game.

Rahane’s reputation was particularly built on his strong performances in Test matches, especially when facing pressure situations. One of his standout moments as a captain came during the 2020-21 series against Australia, where he led the Indian team to a remarkable 2-1 series victory after a difficult start, including a historic low of 36 all out in the first Test. His century in the second Test played a crucial role in that turnaround.

Since July 2023, Rahane has not participated in Test matches for India and has been absent from the national white-ball sides since 2018. His decision to retire was made with careful consideration, reflecting his belief that it was the appropriate time to conclude his international playing career.

In addition to his international achievements, Rahane has previously played for six different franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), concluding his IPL journey with the Kolkata Knight Riders.
