India’s Southwest Monsoon Exhibits Significant Rainfall Variations

India’s southwest monsoon has been marked by significant disparities in rainfall since it began on June 4. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country received 465.9 mm of rain by August 10, which is 12 per cent below the normal of 527.2 mm. This overall deficit is not uniformly reflected across states, leading to varied levels of rainfall experiences throughout the country.

The uneven distribution of rainfall has resulted in some states enjoying sufficient monsoon activities while others continue to face considerable shortages. Understanding these discrepancies is crucial for addressing agricultural and water resource management issues in affected areas.

As of now, the rainfall performance reflects a mixed bag, with some regions benefiting from adequate rain while others remain in drought-like conditions.

States with Notable Rainfall Variations

Meghalaya, recognised as India’s wettest state, has experienced the largest rainfall deficit, with levels 56 per cent below normal. The state received only 763.1 mm of rain during the specified period, compared to the typical 1,739.6 mm. Other northeastern states, such as Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, also reported deficits of 36 per cent.

Several other states are facing scarcity; Bihar is similarly 36 per cent below normal levels, while both Punjab and Andhra Pradesh have recorded deficits of 35 per cent each, and Goa reflects a 35 per cent shortfall. These figures indicate a pressing need for rainfall in various regions to combat the negative impacts on agriculture and local ecosystems.

Conversely, Odisha is currently witnessing a surplus. The state has received 28 per cent more rain, amounting to 857.8 mm against a normal of 668.7 mm, making it the beneficiary of the highest excess rainfall reported so far.

Factors Contributing to Uneven Rainfall

The variability in monsoon rainfall can be attributed to several meteorological factors. The monsoon trough and circulation patterns can result in concentrated rainfall in certain regions while leaving others relatively dry. Recent activity has been driven by low-pressure systems that amplify rainfall in specific areas, as seen in the case of the healthy rain experienced in Delhi-NCR.

The IMD announced that a low-pressure area formed over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas, contributing to increased rainfall activity. Another low-pressure system is anticipated to emerge over the north Bay of Bengal around August 12, which could result in further rain across many parts of central and eastern India.

The inherent unpredictability of monsoon dynamics means that some regions might continue to experience drought-like situations while others could benefit from heavy bursts of rain, emphasising the need for ongoing monitoring and response strategies.

Future Outlook for the Monsoon Season

Despite the existing rainfall deficit, there remains an opportunity for improvement as the southwest monsoon continues until September 30. With nearly seven weeks still available after August 10, the potential for increased rainfall could help mitigate the shortfall.

The IMD forecasts extensive rain across several central, eastern, northeastern, and northwest Indian states in the upcoming days. Regions including Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of the Northeast are expected to see particularly active conditions, which could foster better agricultural outcomes.

However, to fully recover from the national rainfall deficit, sustained and widespread precipitation is essential rather than isolated heavy downpours. Given the varied circumstances across states, addressing the discrepancies in rainfall will be crucial for overall ecological and agricultural stability as the monsoon progresses.
