Misinformation Allegedly Triggered Unrest Among Workers in Noida

The CSR Journal Magazine

The police in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, have stated that misinformation disseminated through two social media accounts instigated unrest among workers who were initially protesting peacefully in Noida. This information was provided during a press conference detailing the events. As a result, the police have filed First Information Reports (FIRs) against both social media accounts, asserting their commitment to taking stringent action against those who allegedly contributed to the escalating tensions during the demonstration in Noida Phase-2.

Details of the Protest and Police Response

Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh addressed the media, clarifying that the police force did not resort to live ammunition and exerted only minimal force at two specific locations to control the situation. She reported that, on that day, around 42,000 workers participated in protests across approximately 83 locations in Noida. Singh emphasised that in 78 of these areas, police managed to disperse the crowds through dialogue, while force was necessary only in two instances where violence occurred.

Singh also highlighted that measures are in place against individuals believed to have provoked the unrest, including some alleged provocateurs from neighbouring districts. She mentioned that certain members of this group have been arrested and that additional suspects are being identified through CCTV footage. The Commissioner assured that anyone engaging in violent conduct would face strict consequences. Furthermore, she urged the protesting workers to show restraint during these challenging circumstances.

In her statement, Singh informed the media that most of the workers’ demands had been addressed, including a proposed wage increase. She explained that out of five main demands, four were immediately met through a subsequent agreement. Among these agreements was the provision for double overtime pay, the establishment of a committee to handle complaints of harassment against female workers, and the introduction of a complaint box for all workers to report grievances related to management.

Formation of High-Powered Committee

Commissioner Singh revealed that a high-powered committee, as commissioned by the Chief Minister, had convened discussions with various stakeholders, including representatives from labour organisations and workers themselves. This committee is expected to submit recommendations soon, aimed at resolving ongoing issues and improving labour conditions.

Singh’s comments also included an appeal to the workers to exercise patience as the discussions progress. The protests in Noida were primarily driven by demands for better wages among factory workers. However, the situation escalated, leading to violent altercations wherein protesters allegedly vandalised vehicles and properties and engaged in stone-pelting incidents during confrontations with police forces.

Ongoing discussions between the committee and stakeholders indicate an effort to resolve the ongoing disputes amidst the unrest. The police department remains vigilant, ensuring that future acts of violence will not be tolerated and that a peaceful resolution to the workers’ demands will be sought. The sentiment expressed by local authorities reflects an attempt to address the core issues while maintaining order in the area.
