Authorities in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, have initiated the demolition of a fire-damaged building in the Aliganj area. This action began on July 25, following the expiration of a fifteen-day notice given to the building owner. The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) deployed bulldozers to the site shortly after the deadline, aiming to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

The demolition was implemented after officials confirmed the extent of dismantling that the owner had undertaken. In addition to the demolition crew, law enforcement was present in significant numbers, maintaining public order during the operation.

This decisive action took place over a month after a tragic fire occurred on June 22. The incident, which affected a coaching institute operating within the building, tragically resulted in the deaths of fifteen individuals, including students and staff members.

Owner Claims Actions Were Premature

The owner of the building, Advocate Rajendra Prasad Shukla, has labelled the demolition as “illegal,” asserting that authorities acted prematurely. He argued that he was in the process of complying with the notice and alleged that he had not received the necessary permissions until July 20, five days before the deadline.

In statements to the media, Shukla expressed his grievances, questioning the timing of the demolition operation. He indicated that he had been working to address the notice since receiving permission and felt he was unjustly thwarted in his efforts.

Shukla stated, “As per the notice, I came to take action but I was not given permission by Aliganj Police Station. This is illegal action.” He further queried, “If they had any objection over the action taken by me, they should have come on July 26. Why did they come before time?”

The fire on June 22 erupted in a three-storey building, which housed both a gaming and animation studio. The blaze quickly spread and tragically led to the loss of life of multiple individuals.
