Rescue teams in Colombia have reported indications of life beneath the rubble in two cities severely impacted by this week’s earthquake. The 7.4-magnitude tremor struck the nation on Monday, claiming at least 285 lives and affecting over 100,000 individuals. As the search for survivors continues, hopes remain high that additional people may be discovered alive.

Alongside ongoing rescue operations, the Colombian government is shifting its focus towards rebuilding the extensive damage to homes, schools, medical facilities, and community centres. President Abelardo de la Espriella announced plans for collaboration between the government and private sector to address the reconstruction needs and to assist families who have lost their homes.

International search and rescue teams from Venezuela, Argentina, and Israel have joined local efforts as time continues to run out for those trapped under debris, nearing the critical 96-hour mark since the earthquake struck. In Pereira, Mayor Mauricio Salazar reported on Friday that rescuers had made contact with a woman seeking help beneath a collapsed hotel.

Extent of Destruction Becomes Clear

As the search for survivors begins to slow down, the full scale of the devastation is becoming clearer. The government indicated that tens of thousands of homes have been either damaged or destroyed across more than 400 cities, in addition to significant damage to thousands of schools, medical facilities, and community centres.

Ebert Jonathan Morales, a resident from Cali, lamented the losses he and his family have endured, stating, “There is no place to live; we lost everything.” Morales and his family are among the 102,263 individuals affected, with approximately 4,000 reported injuries and many more still unaccounted for.

As he surveyed the aftermath in his city, Morales emphasised the tremendous task ahead. Many neighbourhoods in Cali suffered extensive damage, leading him and others to rely on government assistance and community support as they attempt to rebuild their lives from the ground up.

Reconstruction Plans and Community Responses

President de la Espriella, who had just taken office days before the earthquake, acknowledged the complexity of the situation while outlining plans for collaboration with private organisations to facilitate rebuilding efforts. He underscored the need for joint efforts between the government and the private sector to effectively restore Colombia.

Following the devastating quake, many areas have not yet received government aid, forcing residents to depend on neighbours and volunteers for essential support. Community efforts have included organising shelters and distributing necessary items like food and toiletries to those in need.

Maria Mercedes Lievano, director of Save the Children in Colombia, noted the intersection of crises, stating that historically neglected regions are now facing increased challenges following the earthquake. She described the situation as one of extreme vulnerability, particularly in locations such as Buenaventura and Choco, which were hardest hit.

The reconstruction of infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and utilities, will necessitate careful assessments to determine what can be repaired versus what must be rebuilt entirely, according to experts in construction engineering. The scale of the task is immense, requiring a significant commitment to ensure that displaced individuals have access to temporary housing, food, and essential services.

Local and international support continues to arrive, with authorities awaiting humanitarian aid from countries including Peru, China, and the United States. As efforts to find survivors persist, Colombia faces the substantial challenge of rebuilding and restoring basic services for its populace in the aftermath of the earthquake.
