Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that five new nuclear reactors will become operational within the current decade, as he outlined a broader push to strengthen India’s energy security through diversification of its energy mix.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 80th Independence Day, Modi said reliable energy supplies were increasingly important as technologies such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors and data centres require large amounts of electricity. He also set a target of 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.

Energy Demand Driving Need For Greater Security

Modi said the growing importance of emerging technologies had made energy security a critical national priority, with electricity demand expected to rise alongside the expansion of digital and industrial infrastructure.

“Today, it is difficult to run the new world without energy. Whether it is chips, AI or data centres, we need enormous amounts of electricity. Energy security is the need of the hour,” the Prime Minister said.

He stressed the need to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and diversify India’s energy mix to meet the country’s long-term requirements.

According to Modi, nuclear power would play a major role in strengthening India’s energy security and supporting its development ambitions.

Five Nuclear Reactors Targeted This Decade

The Prime Minister said India was moving towards greater self-reliance in nuclear power and had set a target of operationalising five new reactors before the end of the current decade.

“In this very decade, we will have five new nuclear reactors starting operations. We have set a target to get them operational,” Modi said.

The expansion is part of India’s broader effort to increase the availability of reliable and low-carbon electricity as the country’s energy requirements continue to grow.

Modi said nuclear energy would be one of the major means through which India would strengthen its energy security and reduce its dependence on conventional sources.

India Targets 100 GW Nuclear Capacity By 2047

Looking further ahead, Modi said India aims to increase its nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047, when the country will mark 100 years of independence.

“One major means of ensuring energy security is nuclear energy. By 2047, we will have 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity. We are working towards this goal,” he said.

The government’s Nuclear Energy Mission has also set the target of raising India’s nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047.

The planned expansion comes as India seeks to build a more diversified energy system capable of supporting rising electricity demand while strengthening energy security over the long term.
