The Lok Sabha has moved to suspend Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon session. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the motion on July 22, following serious allegations of indecent behaviour and inappropriate language directed towards female Members of Parliament. The motion gained momentum after TDP MP KP Tenneti, who was presiding over the session, informed the House of a written complaint received regarding Banerjee’s conduct.

The complaint detailed accusations of “unprecedented behaviour” by Banerjee during parliamentary proceedings. It reportedly indicated that he engaged in misogynistic verbal abuse towards NCPI members, specifically addressing Minister Bhupendra Yadav. The allegations, if substantiated, highlight a significant concern regarding respectful conduct within the legislature.

Previous Allegations and Parliamentary Reactions

This is not the first instance of allegations against Kalyan Banerjee. In June, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, a rebel TMC MP and current representative of the NCPI, vocally demanded Banerjee’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha. Dastidar characterised his remarks as part of a pattern of “misogynistic” behaviour, calling for accountability for those who disrespect colleagues in the House.

Dastidar, speaking to ANI, described Banerjee as a “habitual offender,” stressing the importance of enforcing consequences against repeated disrespect towards women and fellow members. She conveyed the message that no member should be above reproach for such conduct, underlining the urgent need for upholding decorum in parliamentary interactions.

Previously, Dastidar had formally reached out to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, advocating for the suspension of Banerjee in light of alleged misconduct. In her correspondence, she urged for “appropriate action” against him, referencing an earlier complaint dated May 28, 2026, that documented similar allegations.

Concerns Over Parliamentary Conduct

Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar specified that Banerjee had allegedly used “objectionable, disrespectful and inappropriate language” multiple times during House sessions, directed at her and other women MPs. The ongoing concerns over Banerjee’s conduct have prompted broader discussions about the necessity of maintaining appropriate behaviour within the parliamentary setting, especially concerning the treatment of women members.

The adoption of the suspension motion indicates a collective stance in the Lok Sabha against any actions deemed detrimental to the dignity of the parliamentary institution. The incident reflects a growing recognition of the imperative to create a respectful and inclusive environment for all parliamentarians.

As the Monsoon session progresses, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the broader parliamentary discourse and whether it will lead to stricter regulations concerning conduct within the Lok Sabha.
