Lahore Tuition Centre Roof Collapse Results In Death Of 14 Children

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident in Lahore has led to the death of at least 14 schoolchildren and injured 20 others when the roof of a private tuition centre, operating from an under-construction building, collapsed on Tuesday. The children, aged between seven and 13 years, were reportedly attending classes at the time of the incident, with many of them trapped under the debris.

According to police reports, a female teacher is among those who have been hospitalised following the collapse. Rescue teams are currently engaged in searching through the rubble, hoping to locate any remaining victims. The incident has spurred immediate public concern and has prompted calls for accountability due to the tragic loss of young lives.

Government Response and Investigation

The Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, has directed police and district authorities to identify any individuals responsible for the building’s collapse. Criminal proceedings against those at fault are expected to follow as the investigation unfolds. The local government aims to ensure that lessons are learned from this unfortunate event to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The incident took place in the densely populated area of Kahna Nau, where it is reported that more than 30 children were present in the tuition centre at the time. Faisal Kamran, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) in Lahore, informed reporters that part of the building was still under construction and indicated that workers were present when the roof caved in. In response to the incident, the contractor has been apprehended by authorities.

The Lahore District Education Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Tariq Mahmood, provided additional context, clarifying that the private tuition centre was being run by a local woman. This detail highlights the community aspect of the educational facility, which has been affected severely by this tragic event.

Rescue Operations and Health Services Response

As the search for survivors continues, the Edhi Foundation has reported that the roof reportedly collapsed suddenly, complicating rescue efforts. The deceased children’s bodies have been transported to the morgue at General Hospital, with reports suggesting that the death toll could potentially increase as some children remain trapped beneath the rubble.

The Edhi Foundation also confirmed that the injured individuals have been admitted to hospitals where their conditions are currently being described as stable. Emergency medical assistance has been provided, with Edhi ambulances deployed to the site to attend to the injured and coordinate rescue operations effectively.

Provincial health authorities have declared an emergency at Lahore General Hospital, ensuring that senior administrative officials, doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff are on hand for immediate treatment of the victims. This prompt action underscores the significant public health infrastructure in place to respond to emergencies in the region.
