The death toll in the flooding in Assam has reportedly reached 78, as the situation continues to unfold in several districts. As of July 30, 2023, seven districts remain severely impacted by the floods, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath, and Kamrup (Metro). According to official reports, the floods have led to significant displacement of residents, with thousands affected across various localities.

Furthermore, the floods have impacted 21 Revenue Circles and approximately 551 villages, with around 3,00,031 individuals reported to be affected. The prolonged flooding has also caused damage to agricultural land, with more than 21,523.08 hectares of crops reportedly inundated.

In the ongoing crisis, recent reports indicate that three individuals have lost their lives due to the current flooding, with the fatalities occurring in Sivasagar and Golaghat districts. Officials continue to monitor the situation as the number of casualties may rise due to the severity of the floods.

Urban Flooding in Kamrup Metro

In addition to the rural impacts, urban flooding has been reported in Kamrup Metro. This district has experienced urban-related flooding, affecting three Revenue Circles and various localities, including Padumbari, Boragaon, Excelcare Hospital, and Zoo Road, among others. However, officials have noted that no specific population has been reported as affected by the urban flooding at this time.

The urban flooding has posed unique challenges, as it affects infrastructure and accessibility within the urban areas. As rescue and relief operations continue, local authorities are focused on providing support to the residents of Kamrup Metro and surrounding areas.

Officials are coordinating efforts to address the needs of the population impacted by this situation, striving to restore normalcy in affected areas. The Government of Assam is closely monitoring developments and mobilising resources to assist residents in need.

Relief Efforts and Government Response

In response to the unfolding crisis, Assam Ministers have initiated relief distribution efforts. A convoy comprising 30 trucks loaded with essential supplies has been dispatched to assist the flood-affected regions. These trucks are carrying food materials, clothing, and other necessary items intended for distribution among those impacted by the floods.

Accompanying the relief vehicles are Assam Gana Parishad MPs, MLAs, and senior party officials, alongside Assam Police personnel to ensure the safe delivery of supplies. Assam Minister Atul Bora has noted that members of their party remain on-site to support affected families and areas, underscoring the commitment to community assistance in disaster situations.

Assam’s government, led by Himanta Biswa Sharma, has implemented various support measures. Each affected family is reportedly eligible for a Rs 15,000 assistance package. In addition to financial aid, the distribution of food and essential supplies is ongoing, with ongoing efforts to bolster support for affected individuals and communities as the situation evolves.
