On August 13, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated four significant infrastructure initiatives by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). These projects are designed to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion across Mumbai.

The inaugurated projects include an elevated road connecting Bharat Nagar Road, University Campus to Vakola Junction on the SCLR-2, the Chembur Metro Station from Phase 1A of Metro Line 2B, the commencement of TBM-2 from the Thane side for the Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project, and the renaming of the BKC flyover in honour of the late Barrister Babasaheb Anantrao Bhosale.

Impact on Traffic and Commuter Experience

During a virtual inauguration ceremony, CM Fadnavis highlighted the significance of these projects in improving traffic flow in the area. He noted that six links had originally been planned to ease congestion in the BKC G-Block area, but eight links have now been successfully completed. Fadnavis acknowledged that the Phase-2 landing of the elevated corridor from Bharat Nagar Road to Vakola Junction had generated some traffic issues on the Western Express Highway, but stated that these were being effectively managed.

Fadnavis spoke about the progress of Metro Line 2B, indicating it is nearing completion and will significantly enhance transportation for Mumbaikars. He mentioned that the integration of services would facilitate daily travel for approximately 90 lakh commuters. The Chief Minister asserted that the Central Government’s decision to advance this project has been highly beneficial.

While discussing local train services, Fadnavis called for improvements to match the standards of metro services. He announced the introduction of new automatic air-conditioned local trains, expected to arrive by March 2030, stating that commuting via metro and local trains would become substantially easier for passengers.

Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel Project

Fadnavis also provided updates on the Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project, emphasising its potential to drastically reduce travel time. The current 23-kilometre journey between Thane and Borivali, which typically takes around 90 minutes, is projected to take only 12 minutes once the project is completed. The Chief Minister revealed that the first tunnel was launched two months prior, and the inauguration of the second tunnel marks a significant milestone.

Additionally, he elaborated on the advantages of elevated corridors, stating that locations which previously required hours to reach could now be accessed within minutes, profoundly improving travel efficiency across the region.

Honouring Barrister Babasaheb Anantrao Bhosale

As part of the project announcements, the BKC flyover, which connects G Block in the Bandra-Kurla Complex to the Eastern Express Highway, has been named after Barrister Babasaheb Anantrao Bhosale, a former Chief Minister of Maharashtra. CM Fadnavis praised Bhosale’s contributions to the state, particularly noting his advocacy for free education for girls and his role in the creation of Gadchiroli district during his leadership.

In his remarks, Fadnavis stated that the decision to honour Bhosale with the flyover naming was made in consultation with his family, reflecting the sentiments of the people of Maharashtra. He underscored the importance of preserving Bhosale’s legacy and contributions to the state’s development.

The Chief Minister concluded his address by expressing gratitude to the MMRDA for facilitating these infrastructure projects, attributing the successful development to the organisation’s efforts.
