In response to an interim judicial inquiry report regarding the police encounter that led to the death of Bharat Tiwari, the Bihar government has decided to provide financial support and a government job to a member of his family. Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary made this statement on the social media platform X, asserting that the government’s actions were informed by the findings of the judicial inquiry. This investigation was initiated to address the public outcry following Tiwari’s death.

Details of the Incident

Bharat Tiwari, a resident of Bilauti village in the Bhojpur district of Bihar, lost his life in a police encounter on June 17. His family has consistently claimed that he had surrendered and was unarmed when the police opened fire. This version of events has contributed to intense debate and controversy in the region, prompting the Bihar government to launch a judicial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The family has been vocal in asserting that the encounter was suspect, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the officers involved. Their legal advocate, Sanjeev Kumar Singh, alleged that a concerted effort by various officials led to what they consider a calculated action against Tiwari.

Advocate Singh detailed the family’s perspective during a press briefing, where he indicated that five different police officers allegedly discharged their weapons during the incident. He mentioned, “Five different police officers fired these five shots using five distinct weapons,” emphasising the apparent coordination among the officials present at the scene.

Ongoing Legal Actions and Arrests

The legal representation for Tiwari’s family has taken steps to seek justice through various channels. They submitted a petition to the President, which was ultimately referred to the Chief Secretary for further investigation. This petition has led to some arrests in connection with the case, including the apprehension of a police officer identified as Akshay Kumar.

In ongoing developments in the case, Superintendent of Police Raj confirmed that Akshay Kumar was arrested by joint teams of the Arrah Police and the Special Task Force (STF). This arrest marks a significant step in the legal proceedings, as the police action is scrutinised under the public eye. SP Raj stated, “A policeman involved in the Bharat Tiwari encounter case has been arrested. The arrested policeman has been identified as Akshay.”

According to Singh, there are grave allegations of a conspiracy that led to Tiwari’s death, which he claims was orchestrated by a police officer, a sub-divisional magistrate, and a local political figure starting from June 16. He noted that the fatal encounter was meticulously planned and executed the following day, suggesting it involved not just multiple shooters, but a broader premeditated framework that ultimately culminated in tragedy.
