A routine afternoon of play turned into a crisis when an eight-month-old boy, Saugat Regmi, fell into an ornamental pond at a residential complex in Bengaluru. The child, who had recently moved from Nepal with his family, slipped into the water unnoticed while playing alongside other children. It was not until several minutes had passed that the other children realised he was missing and alerted the nearby adults.

Rescue efforts were initiated immediately, and Saugat was retrieved from the pond, but nearly 45 minutes had lapsed before he was transported to a hospital. Upon arrival at a specialised medical facility, he exhibited signs of severe oxygen deprivation, respiratory failure, and potential brain damage, putting his life at risk.

Medical professionals expressed grave concerns about his condition as they prepared for intensive treatment. Saugat’s case underscored the urgent nature of drowning incidents, especially among young children.

Fighting for Recovery

Upon admission to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Saugat exhibited critical symptoms. His assessments revealed respiratory failure, shock from inadequate blood circulation, and dangerously low oxygen levels. Medical staff quickly identified that the prolonged oxygen deprivation had led to severe acidosis, raising the risk of fatal outcomes and irreversible brain damage.

The medical team promptly placed Saugat on mechanical ventilation and initiated treatment for shock while monitoring his brain activity closely. Their objective was twofold: to stabilise his vital functions and minimise any long-term neurological damage.

Nevertheless, the foremost fear for doctors remained hypoxic brain injury, characterised by a lack of oxygen to the brain. An MRI scan showed early indications of brain concerns, leading to heightened monitoring and rehabilitation strategies focused on restoring his cognitive function and physical abilities.

Complications Arise During Treatment

As treatment progressed, Saugat encountered additional complications due to the aspiration of contaminated water, leading to severe aspiration pneumonia. This further escalated into septic shock, which posed serious risks, such as significantly low blood pressure and organ dysfunction.

The healthcare team was compelled to enhance his treatment regimen with advanced antibiotics and intensive care measures. Despite these challenges, the coordinated efforts of paediatric intensivists, neurologists, and rehabilitation specialists were integral to promoting his recovery.

In the following days, Saugat gradually regained consciousness, recognising his parents and starting to accept food. He embarked on physiotherapy, working diligently to regain his mobility and speech abilities. After nearly ten days of intensive care, he was discharged, marking a significant turnaround from his critical initial state.

Lessons on Drowning Prevention

Dr Anand Patil, a consultant in Paediatrics and NICU, highlighted the urgency surrounding drowning cases, where immediate medical response is essential for survival. He noted that upon Saugat’s arrival, he required prompt and coordinated medical interventions to mitigate the impact of his condition and prevent long-term disabilities.

Physicians emphasised that quick rescue efforts and immediate transfer to specialised paediatric care facilities can dramatically enhance survival rates in drowning scenarios. Furthermore, they underscored the importance of constant adult supervision and proactive water safety measures to prevent such distressing incidents.
