Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has raised concerns regarding police actions during a recent protest by students against an alleged paper leak incident. In remarks made on July 21, he stated that the students experienced significant police violence, resulting in numerous injuries. Kharge detailed instances of lathi charge and tear gas usage, claiming these actions left many protesters requiring hospital treatment.

Kharge’s comments highlight a broader concern regarding the treatment of demonstrators. He asserted that the Congress party sought to bring these issues to the attention of Parliament to advocate on behalf of the affected students. However, he claimed that whenever he attempted to voice these concerns in the Rajya Sabha, his microphone was switched off, questioning the essence of democratic discourse within the legislature.

The Congress leader expressed his frustration that the democratic process seems to be undermined when critical topics face avoidance in parliamentary discussions. According to Kharge, students from various parts of India attended to make their voices heard, underscoring the significance of the issue at hand.

During his address, Kharge reiterated the Opposition’s request for a detailed discussion in Parliament regarding the police action and the broader implications for students. He stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah should respond to the concerns raised. The leader insisted that the voices of other floor leaders should also be acknowledged during such discussions to ensure a comprehensive examination of the issue.

Kharge accused the government of fostering an environment that stifles democratic values. He described the current situation as a conspiracy against democratic principles, stating that in over sixty years of observing Indian politics, he has not witnessed a government operate in this manner. The call for a discussion was framed as a fundamental request for democracy, which he claimed was being continuously eroded.

As the Congress party sought to address these grievances, clashes were reported during a protest march towards Parliament. According to reports, more than 118 police personnel sustained injuries amid the violence, while approximately sixty protesters were also injured. Police officials indicated that demonstrators had allegedly engaged in stone-pelting and vandalism, leading to the registration of FIRs against unidentified individuals.

Amidst the protests, notable climate activist Sonam Wangchuk remains under medical care at Safdarjung Hospital. He was taken there following a hunger strike he initiated on July 18 at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of the Education Minister over the NEET exam paper leak controversy. As of the latest updates, Wangchuk is reported to be stable, although he is experiencing low blood sugar levels.

Medical staff overseeing his care have provided oral rehydration and potassium supplementation. However, Wangchuk has reportedly declined to receive intravenous fluids and glucose, despite medical advice to the contrary. His condition is being monitored by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals committed to ensuring his well-being during this challenging time.

The Congress party has continued to push for dialogue with the government regarding the issues raised by students and the broader implications for education in India.
