Mallikarjun Kharge, the National President of the Congress Party, delivered a strong critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological counterpart, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), during a rally in Haldwani on August 8. He asserted that neither the BJP nor the RSS contributed to India’s independence movement, alleging they have historically avoided any involvement in the struggle for freedom. According to Kharge, members of his party embody true patriotism, in contrast to BJP leaders who he labelled as “deserters.”

In his speech, Kharge questioned the integrity of BJP leaders, insinuating that those who may have participated in freedom efforts were originally part of the Congress and then switched allegiances. He asserted, “This is their history, yet they constantly lecture us on patriotism.” His remarks framed Congress members as the custodians of India’s independence legacy.

Historical Significance of August 8

Kharge marked the date of August 8 as notable in India’s freedom struggle, recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s initiation of the “Quit India Movement” on this day in 1942. He commemorated the slogans “Do or Die” and “Quit India” which galvanised the Indian populace against the British Raj, ultimately leading to the end of colonial rule. The Congress President expressed pride in the size of the crowd gathered during his address, referring to the importance of this date in uniting people against oppression.

Addressing another critical issue, Kharge accused the BJP-RSS of corruption, highlighting instances he claimed involved misappropriation of funds from religious donations at sites such as the Ram Janambhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. He reportedly stated, “People of BJP-RSS are looting in the name of religion,” demanding accountability for the alleged financial misconduct.

Kharge relayed his frustration about discussing these issues in Parliament, stating, “When I stand up to speak on this, BJP MPs start creating a ruckus.” He suggested that such disruptions prevent meaningful discourse on vital matters affecting the nation.

Criticism of State Government Spending and Policies

Kharge critiqued the BJP’s so-called ‘double-engine’ government, questioning substantial funds allocated to advertising, which he stated amounted to 1,000 crore rupees annually. He highlighted concerns about the misuse of taxpayer money for government publicity, implying that these resources could otherwise benefit the public directly.

Reaffirming the historic military legacy of Uttarakhand, Kharge paid tribute to the region as “Devbhoomi” and a place of valour. He referenced the esteemed Kumaon and Garhwal Regiments, asserting that it is a land that produces courageous individuals, including the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. He expressed confidence that the Congress Party would emerge victorious in future elections.

Additionally, Kharge praised Rahul Gandhi for his initiatives to engage with different social groups. He noted Gandhi’s extensive travels across India to raise awareness for youth, farmers, and the economically disadvantaged. Kharge posed a rhetorical question regarding the BJP’s accessibility, contrasting it with Gandhi’s commitment to listening to public concerns.

Future Promises from Congress

In concluding his address, Kharge pledged to repeal the Agniveer Scheme, which he claimed jeopardises the futures of soldiers. He indicated that the Congress Party would naturally absorb Agniveers into permanent roles wherever vacancies exist and suggested the reintroduction of the Old Pension Scheme as a priority once they assume power.
