Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, advocated for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address Parliament regarding the recent Jharkhand incident. Kharge expressed that the Opposition seeks a smooth functioning of the House but expects a prompt response from the government to the issues raised.

Speaking with the media in New Delhi, Kharge highlighted that the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha had instructed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to facilitate the Home Minister’s presence and statement in the House concerning the matter. He stated, “This is a simple request, and it is well within the government’s control. Why they are not present is still unknown.”

Kharge further explained that Rijiju lacks the authority to resolve the matter by himself, serving mainly as a conduit for communication. He noted that discussions on significant issues tend to dissipate without the Home Minister’s involvement, emphasising the necessity for Shah to address the incident directly.

Concerns Over Parliamentary Proceedings

The Leader of Opposition also alleged that efforts to raise points of order within the House have been obstructed, stating, “When I raise a point of order, I am not allowed to speak.” He reiterated that a peaceful assembly of the House is essential, urging the government to support their request for Shah to make a statement regarding the Jharkhand incident.

Kharge indicated that instead of instructing students to seek forgiveness, it would be more appropriate for the government to offer an apology to the affected students and their families. This request underscores the gravity of the situation and the importance of acknowledging the hardships faced by the student community.

When questioned on whether the Opposition’s demands were non-negotiable, Kharge stated that the next steps would be contingent upon the government’s actions. He mentioned, “It depends on when the Home Minister comes to the House and what statement he makes.” He also called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend Parliament and apologise, emphasising the seriousness of the incident.

Ongoing Student Protests and Congressional Support

Reflecting on the ongoing protests related to the Jharkhand issue, Kharge affirmed that the Congress Party will persist in advocating for student rights. He mentioned that they have reached out to their allies to gather support, stating, “We are raising the students’ cause. We have written to our allies as well.” This approach indicates a collective effort to address issues impacting the student community at large.

In recalling the sentiments expressed by former Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley, Kharge highlighted that disruptions in Parliament can be a fundamental aspect of democracy. “When Arun Jaitley was the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, he had said that disruption is part of democracy. Our request is simple, the government should come to the House and respond,” he concluded.

This situation underscores the ongoing tension between the government and the Opposition in Parliament, particularly concerning sensitive issues affecting students. The Congress Party’s stance reflects their commitment to upholding student welfare and ensures that concerns are adequately addressed in the legislative process.
